We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Puc and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up around photography. My mother has been a photographer since she was 18. She runs a successful photography business in Colorado. I have been fortunate enough to watch her work and learn from her friends, some of the best photographers in the industry. While I was hesitant at first to start photography as a business, (as my mother, brother and close friends were all photographers), I decided that my own view and passion for capturing authentic moments was important to share. I love that I can stop moments in time with my button and preserve happy memories. I love capturing authentic beauty, warmth and joy. That is why I started and that is why I keep going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started photography as a side-hustle; it wasn’t something I really thought of as doing as an actual profession but have been pleasantly surprised as my business and brand has grown. The photography industry isn’t easy, there are tons of qualified and amazing creatives that inspire and intimidate me (in the best way), so breaking in and finding my own style has been hard. I want to take photos that represent me, but that appeal to a broad audience. Finding that niche isn’t easy and it’s taken time. But, I have learned some valuable lessons. First, stay true to yourself. It doesn’t matter if everyone loves what you do if you don’t love it. Second, learn from others; it’s impossible to do things on your own, ask for help and be willing to listen. Third, make friends; the photography industry is tough- making friends in it can be tough, don’t be afraid to reach out and let other photographers know you like their work, style, etc. having friends in the industry make it 100x better. Honestly, I know that there are a lot of “me” (photographers), but if my work just makes one person happy, or look at their images and know they’re beautiful, than it is worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE Denver, but I am a Littleton girl through and through, often surrounding areas of Denver get forgotten, and unfortunately due to COVID, I haven’t had the chance to explore or participate in the things I normally would. But, if COVID wasn’t a thing and life was back to normal, here’s what I would share with a friend visiting in the spots I love the most. Morning: start out with yoga at Red Rocks Amphitheater, then breakfast at Littleton Cafe. Littleton Cafe is a small family-run breakfast place, it’s a staple of mine, and honestly is a hidden gem. Get the cinnamon roll and their seasoned potatoes, you will not be disappointed. Afternoon: a walk on the Platte River by Carson Nature Center, it is SO fun, and in the summer you can tube down the Platte. While walking on the Platte, stop by Breckenridge Brewery for a beer and some food and fun. They have a great outdoor patio and lawn games in the summer, plus the perfect view of the mountains doesn’t hurt. Dinner: head to Angelos for some seafood, or to Downtown Littleton. The Downtown Littleton area has so many fun places to eat and things to do. There’s a great local music scene and fun outdoor bars. Besides Angelos, go to Kate’s Wine Bar, or the Chocolate Therapist for dessert.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my wonderful friends and family who have supported me. For my friends who have allowed me to take their photos and practice techniques and ideas out on them (Zoe, Jake, Saneh, Pedro, I am looking at you), and for those who have inspired and taught me how to work a camera, purchased equipment for me and proudly wore my logo sweatshirts (Sandy Puc’, Jordyn K, Nik Puc, Geralyn Cooper). For the Sunday Night Meets Headquarters for providing space for indoor photoshoots, and for those that have passed along my name to friends. I thank you!
