We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole & Marcus Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole & Marcus, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think one of the most important factors to our success over the years has been flat out grit, grind, and not giving up. Our first few flips were some of the roughest experiences we ever had. One particular deal 9 years ago almost left us financially ruined. Facing a lot of fear and uncertainty, we looked at each other and said that the only way we were going to make it out was to keep going and we were willing to do whatever it took to turn things around. So we sold our home, kept investing in real estate, & I studied & became a licensed Realtor. We continued to grind & invest in real estate as I continued to build up my retail real estate business. Within a few short years we had recovered financially and were in a position for my husband to quit his full-time job and focus solely on real estate investing- which was a huge milestone in our goals as entrepreneurs.
Juggling a real estate brokerage, managing investments, & raising 4 young kids has not been easy! We sacrificed a lot in those early years to work towards our goals and be where we are at today. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it!
What should our readers know about your business?
We started investing in real estate in Ohio in 2007 as landlords. When we moved to Colorado in 2012 we started our real estate investment company, Co Vision Property Investments, and began flipping houses throughout Northern Colorado, and buying rental properties. Today Marcus manages the investment side of our business and is now primarily focused on buying mortgage notes & generating passive income. I started my own real estate brokerage, Co Vision Real Estate Group, nearly 5 years ago and focus on helping my clients buy & sell property throughout Northern Colorado. I love working with people! I love helping them navigate through the process & building relationships. Every situation & transaction is unique & my goal is to make sure my clients know how much I care about them & that I am here to guide them every step of the way.
My brokerage is a bit unique in the industry because I offer a 1.5% listing fee rather than the typical 3% listing fee for sellers. I have very little overhead costs & I decided early on in my career that I would pass those savings on to my sellers & make it a win-win for all of us. Over the years I have helped my clients save hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a hard one because there is so much to do around here! I would break it down into categories:
MUST SEES:
Estes Park- Rocky Mountain National Park
MUST DOs:
Hike Horsetooth Rock
Shop in Old Town
Live Music in Old Town Square
Attend a Sporting Event at CSU
MUST EATs:
Ginger & Baker
Lulu’s Asian Bistro
Blue Agave
Walrus Ice Cream
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have been blessed with many great supporters throughout our journey- especially in the early years. We will forever be grateful to those who trusted us, invested their funds with us, who cheered us on when things were tough, who gave us guidance through uncharted territory, & shoulders to cry on when things were tough.
One of the most impactful books that we read when we were first married at 21 was Robert Kyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. That book forever changed the way we looked at time and money and set us on a path of financial freedom through real estate.
