We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicolukas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicolukas, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My name is Nicolas and artistically I’m known as Nicolukas. I was born in Bogota Colombia where my family is from too. I’m the middle child between my two siblings and I. My parents came from a middle class family and they were doing their best effort to give us a better life and moving to Colorado was a decision they took when I was 11 years old as they wanted to give us a better life and open our minds to different things by moving to the US.
At first it wasn’t easy as it was a new country, culture and language, I felt as an outsider but with time people made me feel welcome. For me everything was new but I was also the new person for everyone which made me the spotlight at school and different places which help to bring out a side of me that I didn’t know existed.
Music has been my first love since I can remember and being from a Latino country the love for music and dance comes naturally to me. Colombia is a very diverse country in the music scene and growing up between different influences from both sides of my parents’ families made me who I am today.
Being an urban/reggaetón artist started many years ago you could even say from my childhood given that in the 2000’s (the time I grew up in) reggaetón was the new sound that was taking the streets and the rhythm that we didn’t know back then but we know now was going to take over the world. In Colombia this rhythm started and it was unknown and not very popular but thanks to being young and curious my siblings and I discovered the rhythm that made me fall in love with music even more.
The music I give to my audience today is very close to me because every time I am in the studio with my team I give my all and I make sure that I’m transmitting who I am. I always try to bring something fresh and new combined with my personal taste and what I feel could touch people’s hearts. For me music is an universal language that it does not matter if you don’t understand what they are saying, the feeling that is behind the song can make you understand what the singer was trying to transmit. The feeling that makes you happy, sad or empathetic with the person next to you, or that feeling that brings people together and makes them best friends after a good awesome party night.
The influences from my roots makes me think on what I want people to feel and how I do want to make them feel with my music, I want to show to the world that music can unite people even if you are from different places, seasons of life or backgrounds. I want to show that music can break walls and barriers that are there to sometimes divide us. Also I want to inspire people to fight for their dreams and never give up, show them that everything is possible and that not matter what you can always achieve whatever you want.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am different because I have a mix of two cultures in me. I grew up part of my childhood in Colombia and continue that growing up process in the US where the music taste and scene was different, I was exposed to different rhythms and music that most likely I wouldn’t have a chance to hear in Colombia not because the music doesn’t reach there but because I wouldn’t have been around people who liked it and could show me something different from what I knew.
It is been a fun ride but it hasn’t been easy as there are some days that things don’t work as you want or expect or things just don’t align with what you want/need at that moment but every time something like that happens it has teach me a lesson. I’ve learned that you have to be thankful with the people who have been there for you and have giving you a chance to keep going with your dreams. Being grateful every day even for the smallest things like being alive makes you change your perspective so quick and it focus you again on what you want during those days that are hard to stay afloat. Being and staying humble is very important as your success reaches further you will be tempted to forget that and it can be tough if you don’t keep a clear mind on who you are. Don’t allow anything to change you and always be genuine and stay true to who you are because that is what open doors and put you in the position that you are at the moment. Hard work beats anything not matter what it is if you are focus and working hard giving your 200% things will come to fruition at the end. Last thing never give up believing on yourself because if you don’t believe on yourself nobody else would.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll first go to 5430 rooftop in downtown during the sunset to grab a drink and see the city during the day and night to see the contrast, next it would be an awesome meal in a restaurant like Ocean prime, fogo de chao, the keg steakhouse or perry’s steakhouse as I’m a meat lover and they offer the best steak cuts in the city with delicious flavors in their meals. Go to lookout mountain to see the view of the city at night from such a cool place like the mountains.
During the day we could go to Boulder to Pearl Street and walk around check out a few local shops and enjoy local foods, also brunch it is amazing at Snooze with their incredible pancakes or first watch with their seasonal menu.
Hiking would be part of the itinerary as they are beautiful places with incredible scenery to see. places like St. Mary’s Glacier, Echo Lake or Abyss pass are one of my favorite places to go
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will always be thankful for my family as they have been there for me throughout this adventure, also the people I have met in the way like my professors, friends who I call now family and God who gave me the talents that I have.
