We had the good fortune of connecting with Noelle Helmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Noelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Pregnancy and Birth, when they are focal points, seem to cloud everyone’s focus when support for pregnant women is considered. But most mothers are left floundering and expected to get back on the proverbial horse after birth as if they didn’t just undertake the most challenging event of their life. Creating Nest of Love Doula services is my way of offering support and education to women around the initial postpartum period to support mothers and babies to a healthy and peaceful beginning together. From nourishing food, caring arms to hold baby while mom takes a shower, or an ear to hear and heart to receive her concerns and joys. Postpartum doula work is another vital part of the continuum of maternal care around the birthing year.

What should our readers know about your business?
Arriving to this point in my business is still a work in progress. Learning what women need and want most postpartum, and how to connect with clients who desire in depth care postpartum. The inspiration for this business comes from the plethora of stories of women (from my own grandmother to women at the grocery store) who had no time or support postpartum to heal and rest. Mixed with my own deep desire to serve my community, beginning at the beginning, so to speak, has been the best way to help mothers and babies establish healthy and joyful relationships.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being partial to the great outdoors, I’d shoot for a hike every other day. Estes Park is so close, and is absolutely brimming with beautiful and varied hikes! But I love the 285 passage, so driving a while wouldn’t be out of the question. As far as food and beverage, I’d love to cook and host at home, and venture out a bit as a post-hike treat. Bucey Brews in Nederland has the best nachos around, and Longs Peak Pub in Longmont has a lot of options for whatever classic American tastes a guest may have. Magic Fairy Candles in Longmont would be a must, since the herb counter is already a fair friend when I’m setting up herbal care for my postpartum moms. Primitive Beer would be my choice for a brewery, as they focus on wild fermentation. And Georgia Boys Barbeque? Yes, please. For as many chains that permeate the Front Range, I’m grateful to have a great array of local establishments to support.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The books The First Forty Days by Heng Ou and The Fourth Trimester by Kimberly Ann Johnson are two books that struck a chord with me. When I was pregnant with my first child, these two books inspired me to think about the postpartum more in depth. From food choices for the newly shifted digestive system, to reconnecting with my postpartum self concerning pelvic floor health and rest. And so much more. In addition to these written resources, my husband, Tom, deserves heaps of credit in being more support than I could have asked for. Being blessed with the ability to use sick days to be home with me, he ensured I was fed, rested, and in good company while I adjusted to staying still and nursing our daughter 24/7.
