We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Hansen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance? That’s quite the conundrum for me at the moment! Poor work life balance was a significant factor that led me to leave my previous employment and start working freelance videography. Over time, with significant changes in my personal life (for one, we had a baby!), the scales have tipped too far in the other direction! I’ve had difficulty finding time to devote to my passion for content creation. It hurts, but I suppose it’s just part of life as we and our loved ones grow older.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Freelance videographer. So far, that’s been the best title I’ve been able to think of for the “business side” of my business. The majority of my published content, the initial purpose of my channel “RoadTripCentral”, would probably still be considered hobby work, as of now. I’m still new to the videography world, having no formal training and having been striving to develop my skills over the past few years, but I have had the honor of being tasked with creating promotional video, informative/PSA video for small government, wedding, and automotive content (my specialty). I pride myself in being committed to quality content while remaining budget friendly, and most importantly doing everything I can to make my client’s vision come to life.

I’ve learned a fair bit since starting my videography business, and I definitely have so incredibly much more to learn. I’ve had some hard lessons…like how technology can’t be trusted to perform even though it plays such an integral part of our everyday work. Now, I remember to bring backup equipment and I have valuable real-life experience with adapting to failing equipment in the middle of a video shoot.

Some of my more significant challenges include marketing, work-life balance, and forming my brand image (and sticking with it). “RoadTripCentral” is the name I chose for my personal video projects showcasing some of my favorite scenic routes and the exhilarating cars that I choose to drive them in. As RoadTripCentral already features automotive content, I decided to also include content that solely centers around the vehicles themselves. But now what have I done? My content under the name “RoadTripCentral” now includes videos that don’t have even a drop of road trip in them. I never would have thought that I’d struggle with sticking to the brand, but here I am. Should I change the name entirely, or just create a new and separate brand? The struggle is real.

While I work through recent work-life complications (we just had a baby), I have unfortunately had to push my recreational automotive content to the back burner, but I am still eagerly accepting work from anyone who’s ready for new video content. Just shoot me an email!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ohhh, have I got the week for you! I’ll always have my list of favorite restaurants in any given area, but what would truly make the time special would be to venture out to see the unique natural (or even man-made) sights!

Each day would start and end with a meal from one of my favorite local restaurants, but the better part of the day would be have to be spent on winding roads through the mountains, visiting National Parks/Monuments, and taking in some of the wonderfully intriguing architecture of local buildings or bridges. Colorado, for example, is full of awe-inspiring views that are within just an hour’s drive from wherever you are.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife has always been incredibly supportive of my business endeavors. She has played a huge part in promoting my work, connecting me with people, and encouraging me to keep my head up even when business has been slow. Without her, none of my work could have come to fruition!
