Meet Orrin Lewis | Four Wheeling Enthusiast and Youtuber

We had the good fortune of connecting with Orrin Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Orrin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It hasn’t been much of a career really. Its just been a hobby; something I like doing for fun. I’ve always loved films and I enjoy film making. I started the off roading stuff when I moved back to Colorado in 2019 and I thought it would be fun two kill two birds with one stone and film all of my adventures. I used to make little films when I was in elementary school for class projects and really enjoyed it back then. So I kind of think its always been something I enjoyed doing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the vehicle I use and the style of my videos kind of sets me apart from a lot of other people on Youtube. The Colorado ZR2 isn’t as popular as the jeeps and tacomas in the off roading community and so I think I give people who have the truck I have a little bit of inspiration to start their own adventures. A lot of four wheeling videos these days are just highlight reels of certain trails, but I have started to make my videos more about the story line. I want people to feel like they are there with me. I want them to see all the little things that go into the trip, not just the cool rock crawling scenes. I think the biggest challenge with this hobby is trying to film and drive and have fun all at the same time. The driving itself is stressful and takes thought and effort every inch of the way. The filming takes a lot of mental planning; trying to figure out what shots I should take and the angles and the timing and who is going to film it and from where. When all of that is going on it can be hard to actually enjoy yourself. Learning how to use the editing software and the little tips and tricks that make a video pleasing to watch took a long time to learn as well. I really overcame most of this just by getting out there and doing it; putting in the effort and just getting better at it a little bit at a time. Now I can go drive these trails and the filming is like second nature cause I have done it so much. The editing is super easy cause I invested the time in the beginning to really learn how to do it.
I think that success just equals a bunch of failures until one day it just works. The key is to just not give up when its hard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1: Colorado Springs. We would do the incline, get breakfast at the Urban Egg on North Nevada, drive through Garden of the Gods, get lunch at the Airplane restaurant, grab a beer at Ivy Wild, and play some pool at Phantom Canyon Brewery. Day 2: Drive to Breckenridge and enjoy the shops and little bars. We would make sure to eat dinner at Breckenridge Brewery because they make my favorite beer.
Day 3: Visit Frisco and Aspen. We would get lunch at Outer Range Brewing Company in Frisco and then drive to Aspen and just walk around the beautiful town. There are these really cool irrigation streams that flow in front of the houses there. I used to make little dams in them when I was a kid when we would visit. The Maroon Bells are just 10 miles outside of Aspen.
Day 4: Drive up Red Cone pass and camp in the mountains.
Day 5: Visit Telluride and Ouray. Drive Black Bear and Imogene Pass. Ride the gondola in Telluride in the fall to see all of the leaves changing.
Day 6: White water raft in the royal gorge and maybe do some fly fishing if you’re into that.
Day 7: Visit the Sand Dunes and climb to the highest dune.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My girlfriend Kristin comes along on a lot of my trips and helps me film. She also adds a really nice touch to the videos just with her personality and the way she is on camera.
