We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Tarver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pat, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While working for a pet retail center as a dog trainer, I found myself very limited in the curriculum I was teaching and the types of behavior cases I was able to assist with. I felt as though there was much more for me to be able to do, but I needed to venture out on my own to never encounter limitations again. Many of my clients pushed and supported me through this endeavor, and without them I’m not sure it would have been possible.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At One of the Pack, our mission is to promote the growth of parent knowledge to give their dogs the highest quality of life available to them. We are passionate about a dog’s ability to think and make decisions. Building a bond is the highest priority when we are working with guardians and companions. I think what sets us apart is the ability to reach a dog not only how to follow directions, but also make proper choices in difficult situations while looking to their guardian when they are not sure what they should do. We train without the use of shock, prong, or slip collars. Through every step of the training process for any particular dog, we put the ball in their court so to speak.

I got to this point through hard work, honesty through each transaction, and the support of those who care about me and the message I’m spreading. We’re still very early, so marking any particular challenge is difficult. Nothing more than any other small business owner would encounter. The aforementioned Christina Holmes ensured we were prepared thoroughly, and her knowledge and effort was invaluable in the pre-launch stage of One of the Pack. However, we are still a young company. There are many challenges yet to be encountered, but I assure I’m ready to persevere through any of them!

My crowning achievement thus far was placing third in NocoStyle’s Best of NoCo dog training category in our first year of business. I definitely did not cry grown man tears when I got that email at all. In addition, being referred to do this interview was even more proof that what I’m doing with One of the Pack is meaningful.

I want the world to know one thing if nothing else: You do not have to shock, pop, clamp, or punish your dog in anyway to see results. The science proves this in case study after case study. This includes police dogs, military dogs, protection dogs, any dog. That’s it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I want anyone reading this to keep in mind anyone coming to visit me is probably coming from the swamps of Louisiana!

Certainly we would have to hit some food places, and there are only certain places a person from Louisiana won’t turn their nose up at! We’ll have to hit Mo Jeaux’s to show them there is some Cajun in colorado. When time gets tight I’ll slide through Good Times for the best fast food burger on the planet. Our dinner spots would be Nick’s, Moot House, Cafe Mexicali, and my personal favorite spot, Henry’s Pub in Loveland. I’m sure we’ll be at Henry’s for more than one dinner!

There would have to be two or three hiking trips. A morning stroll (they don’t have to know it’s not a stroll) around Horsetooth, Gray Rock, and Devil’s Backbone would be my first choices. They’re not crazy high elevation for baby swamp lungs, so it seems optimal.

Depending on what’s around, I’d have to show them the Aggie Theatre as some point during their stay. It has such a cool atmosphere and the history is incredible. I’d also plan a Denver day to check out everything awesome it has to offer starting with Meowulf of course!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Striblings, the Allinghams, Christina Holmes, and all of my “day one” clients who have supported me along the way.

My company, One of the Pack, is also a proud partner of Caring Canines Colorado Therapy Program. The work we do with them is very rewarding, and the motivation I get from hearing the volunteers’ stories of working with children is unparalleled.

I’d also like to shoutout Amber Quann, the owner of Summit Dog Training for allowing me the use of her space. It has been monumental in my company’s growth!
