We had the good fortune of connecting with Pedro De La Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pedro, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My name is Pedro De La Cruz. I am an artist born in the city of Tijuana, Mexico. We lived in a world of poverty, so we knew we had to work. I sold popsicles in the streets to help my parents. I knew how to talk to people and how to draw them in different moods. That part of my life also helped shape my art, since I taught myself how to draw. Art would become my new voice and my escapism.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a mix of places. I was born at the border of Tijuana, but my mother is from Jalisco, Mexico. The colors in my art come from Jalisco. The rancher style is a blend of old California Spanish lifestyles and the Pueblos in Mexico. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am at now, because most galleries rejected my art. I kept trying and trying to get into a gallery and I only got rejections. So one day I decided I would create my own space and brand. I found a tiny art studio, and decided I would paint a lot of pieces. I would post these paintings on social media, and people would go nuts for them. I started posting other businesses so they would get traffic. I learned we are all codependent on each other’s businesses. I also learned you actually have to care about people. You have to learn to be kind to people and have compassion. It is the love for people which drives me and inspires me. The genius thing I did was I never gave up, ever! I want people to know they also can achieve their dream, it is a lot of work but so worth it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the city of Santa Barbara, California. I would eat at Brophy’s because they have delicious food, but also the best view of the beach and the city. You have to check out the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara. This area has art studios and also wine tasting rooms, and all within walking distance.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate this shout out to my wife Adela De La Cruz, for being so supportive of my creative career.
