We had the good fortune of connecting with Petar Dopchev and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Petar, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was over showing up to a job which didn’t bring any fulfilment or inner satisfaction in my life. I was ready to grow as a person and be responsible for the way I make my living.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography was born alongside my desire to explore and adventure. That was the reason I came to the United States at the first place – wanted to spend a winter snowboarding in the mountains. Had recently purchased a dslr camera with my brother and started using it to document the experience while living life with no regret.
It takes a while to develop a style in photography, just like anything else. I had moments when I didn’t put as much effort into it as I wish I did, I was lacking the self-discipline and had “holes” in the process, but what kept me going was my passion for adventure and that is what I photographed. I would show up at different sport events and take pics just because I wanted to be out there and eventually that is how I landed a job for the local newspaper, which helped a lot with meeting people and getting my name out in the “local” world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them in the woods! Hahaha. There is so much to explore around Crested Butte, it has world class mountain biking trails, hiking, alpine ponds and peaks to “conquer”. And amazing cocktails at the Dogwood!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Don Giannatti has been one of my early mentors in photography – did his “Project 52” course. https://dongiannatti.com
