We had the good fortune of connecting with rachel askelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi rachel, what makes you happy? Why?
There are so many people and things that make me happy. And I could make such a long list of everyone and everything included in that happiness! But I believe happiness is truly a byproduct of a way of being. And although people and experiences bring me so many moments of happiness, my true happiness is within. Within my heart and thought processes, happiness is an ongoing state of existence that I work toward. The more aligned my internal self is, the more joy I feel from the external sources, of my loved ones.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work has shifted quite a bit in the last year. I had a baby and then the pandemic hit which led me to move out of my physical working space and take a step back and review what I was doing and why. My work is currently not in the interest of financial gain in terms of success, but for connection and community. I’m really proud of my ability to adapt and change things when I feel they need change! I’ve enjoyed the evolution of my business, but it has definitely come with a set of challenges. I studied in Guatemala and had the opportunity to learn about traditional maya healing practices. My time in Guatemala was so healing for myself that I felt a calling to share with others. I have a deep connection to my studies and particularly connected with the teaching of the mayan energy calendar. But I feel it is currently not in my best interest to have a business surrounded by another culture that isn’t mine. I still love to share birth chart readings with people, I’ve just really changed the format of the exchange. I love sitting with people, sipping on cacao and being open and genuine. I enjoy blogging and have committed to a “no buy year” which includes any new clothing, jewelry, shoes, etc. I have 13 other people that joined me on this journey and am just trying to focus on attainable change within my local community. The entire world is shifting, and I am going with the flow and surrendering to total ambiguity. So much change! My husband and I are also getting ready to launch a little family business, and I am really excited about that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost, Nurture! Nurture is a WellCare Marketplace that is home to incredible wellness practitioners, a health foods cafe, local retail and the most caring people you’ll find in Denver. My out of town friend and I would visit Nurture at least twice! I love Old Town Arvada, and the food at Urban Beets. Driving to Red Rocks and walking around is always fun, and stopping in Golden to walk along the river. Other favorite spots would include walking around Tennyson Street and eating at Vital Root and grabbing coffee at Downpours, and then stoping into Feral – the retail /resale store.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband! He is the most supportive person in my life, and has done so much to encourage me throughout the years. I don’t always have a clear path laid out ahead of me, and he is so patient in my ever evolving journey. He’s amazing, and also the most talented human I’ve ever known.
