We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I disagree with the conventional advice of “follow your heart”. I don’t believe that following our emotions and wants blindly get us anywhere good. Our hearts want comfort – but we only grow outside of our comfort zones. I truly believe that there is a balance between our passions and logic. Our emotions can be a helpful tool, but letting our emotions lead 100% of the time is dangerous.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
WolfCreekCowgirlCo. is a lifestyle brand inspired by the Rocky Mountain cowgirl (me), and is named after the little tiny town of Wolf Creek, Montana where I learned how to fish as a kid. I was born and raised in Montana, and cowgirls there are just built different. Not only do we rope and ride, but we also hunt, fish, hike, climb, and ski. I noticed a lack of representation for the mountain cowgirl within the western fashion industry, and decided to start this brand with that cowgirl in mind. I wanted to be a able to sell an experience, rather than just selling clothing. I wanted other women to experience what I have experienced all my life. Not only is our clothing unique and different from the rest of the western fashion world, but also the amazing women who represent the brand.

Starting the brand has been far from easy, but God has opened every door along the way. We currently run the business out of a fifth wheel trailer in Texas, where my husband and I are temporarily living for his job, and “crammed” is an understatement. I’ve definitely learned how to be scrappy and resourceful, and am now a firm believe that you can create success from absolute nowhere if you have grit. Running a business inspired by the Rocky Mountains out of a place that is far from it has been interesting to say the least, but outsourcing has been key and we have made it work despite the challenges.

I’ve learned to pick myself up over and over again, and that “failure” isn’t actually real unless you never learn from it or you quit entirely. Just like getting bucked off of a horse and getting right back on, business is all about picking yourself up no matter how many times you get thrown to the ground. That truly is the key to success. It’s out there for you to grab, you just have to want it bad enough.

My brand is all about the “unique” and “strange” cowgirl. Your biggest superpower is what makes you odd and different. I created this brand from my own unique style and personality, rather than “fitting in” to the current industry, and it paid off because the brand is 100% true to who I am and what I’m passionate about.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s a little bar outside of Bozeman, Montana called the “Old Saloon”. I’d take them there for a beer after we had just got done skiing or hiking. One of my favorite places to get coffee is the “General Mercantile” in Helena, Montana. While in Dillon. Montana, I would have them check out the “Bannack Ghost Town” to learn some of Montana’s vigilante history.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to thank my Dad, John, for the inspiration behind WolfCreekCowgirlCo. He has taught me that you can learn almost anything from just being in the outdoors. I thank Jesus that I have this business, the amazing people in my life, and the opportunity to do what I do. My amazing husband, Jake, has been nothing but supportive especially within the beginning stages of the business. I don’t know where I would be without the Heart & Hustle Podcast and their incredible business advice.
