We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, what do you attribute your success to?
Focus on being of service.

It’s easy as a solo entrepreneur to get distracted and worried about marketing, branding, funnels, and sales strategies. When starting a new business, it can feel overwhelming. While getting the word out there about your business is important, I have found that my best marketing has come from focusing on being of service to my clients and letting that commitment drive what I do next.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I help yoga teachers and studios create excellent online and in person education. In my field (yoga), there are many passionate yoga teachers, but not every one knows how to distill and transmit the magic of their teaching into a robust educational experience. I bridge that gap and help my busy and passionate yogis launch their own educational programs, such as online courses and professional training programs.

Getting here wasn’t easy – but it sure has been fun! I attribute my current success in part to my own passion for learning. As a yoga teacher, I have always been obsessed with continuing education and have invested deeply in my own knowledge and skills base. When I felt the desire to create online programs for yoga, I wanted to do it right. While I was working full-time for a yoga studio, I went back to school to earn my Masters in Instructional Systems and Learning Technology. I spent many hours in a coffee shop in the wee hours of the morning hammering away at my degree in order to learn the skills I needed to support my business.

Creating one’s own business is a lot of work, but it can also be immensely rewarding. That said, I have found the work-life balance can be tricky. After all, my business feels like “my baby” and I want to love on it as best I can. While that desire is great fuel for the work fire, it can be hard to take a time out. However, it’s important to remember that we are running a marathon – not a sprint – and to take time to do activities outside of work that help make your life sustainable.

Another challenge for me as a solo entrepreneur has been delegation. Ahh, who to trust? As the only one who knows all aspects of my business, it sometimes feels impossible to offload my work tasks. It also takes a little while to figure out where delegation is worth it – and where it is not. I have wasted money on supposed ad experts to promote my brand (not worth it!) but also invested in work with graphic designers who were able to create beautiful marketing templates that aligned with my vision (totally worth it!). I suggest that you test the waters of delegation slowly to build your trusted team – and remember that consistent communication is key.

Related to delegation, collaboration with trusted partners can be a key to success. As the proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” One of my trusted partners is DoYogaWithMe, an online yoga provider. We joined forces to create an online yoga teacher training that remains a bedrock of my own business. Find opportunities to connect with others in your space and see what you can grow. And remember: authentic and beneficial relationships may take time to build.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend were coming to visit me in Colorado, I’d take them down to Colorado Springs. We’d get breakfast and coffee in Old Colorado City, tour through the Garden of the Gods, hit up lunch in Manitou Springs, then drive up to the Cave of the Winds for a spooky experience. Let’s top it all off with dinner at Shuga’s and check out the hip clientele.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shoutout to my own trainers and teachers, who have paved the path for me to use my career to share my passion for yoga. In particular I’d like to mention Yoga Works, YYoga, Chris Chavez, and Louie Ettling.
