We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, why did you pursue a creative career?
The why is always a question worth curiosity in the field of mental health. What brings clinicians to this field provokes introspection, subjectivity, and awareness.

Growing up in a home with two parents who were both self-employed was something that always inspired me. Throughout childhood and adolescence, I found myself intrigued by my mother’s work in the field of forensic psychology; The way in which the mind responds to adversity was captivating.

As a teenager, I struggled with my own mental health challenges following my parents’ divorce. I also began to notice the impact of untreated mental health concerns with my family in friends. It wasn’t until 2016, following the suicide of my partner at the time that my desire to enter this field was catapulted.

Mental health touched my life on an individual level, like it does many of us. The gaps in mental health, barriers in access to treatment, and disparities motivated my exploration in the Social Work realm.

The majority of my career was spent in community mental health where I worked with youth post-hospitalization for suicidality as well as survivors of interpersonal violence. During my time in community mental health, I began to feel motivated to create a whole-body approach to healing in private practice. I hope to adapt models of community mental health to a private practice setting including trainings to the community, physical wellness coaching, and supervision support to new clinicians.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a mental health private practice in the Denver Metro area. We provide individual psychotherapeutic services, workplace mental health trainings, and supervision services. I took the comprehensive approach to treatment from a community mental health model to implement a whole-body approach to wellness including case management, peer specialist, and wellness coaching services.
Prior to opening Taylored Perspectives, I worked to gain as much training and experience with a range of clients, providers, and systems. I have worked in school, in home, in office, and virtual settings. I sought supervision training to enhance my efficacy in approach to training new clinicians. My goal is to enhance training processes for new clinicians, create well rounded opportunities for clients, and provide awareness to the community through workplace trainings.
Building your own business can be scary, overwhelming, and is no easy feat. Making the leap from the support of a w2 job to the field on your own was conflicting. It was hard to know where to start. Taylored Perspectives would not be anywhere without the support of friends, family, and collogues who helped me navigate the endless imposter syndrome and questions,

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a big foodie, so restaurant recommendations are my forte. For breakfast in Boulder, The Buff, Village Coffee Shop, or Moe’s Broadway Bagels. In Denver, Onefold, Just Be, Luciele’s, or HashTag. For lunch, Avanti, Edgewater Marketplace, or Root Down. For dinner, Guard and Grace, Hickory and Ash, Los Chingones, or Stella’s Cucina are a must.

Must see Colorado staples include Chataqua Park to see the flatirons, Garden of the Gods to see incredible rock formations, and a concert at Red Rocks Ampitheater.

For a fun afternoon, try afternoon tea at the Dushanbe Tea House or hike at Rocky Mountain National Park. If you have your kiddos with you, try Bounce Empire, Meow Wolf, or any of our wonderful museums. We have tons of indoor putt putt for cold Winter days, Water World on the hot Summer days, and a planetarium show at Fisk Planetarium when you need to step into another realm. Outdoor shopping malls are endless from Pearl Street in Boulder to the Outlets in Castle Rock. Attend a show at Comedy Works or a Brewery tour at any of our famous Brewery’s. There are activities for everyone throughout the Denver Metro area!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my parents, husband, brother, and various supervisors that helped me enter this field, held my hand during hard times, and challenges me to step outside of my comfort zone. I also would like to thank the clients I have been lucky enough to work with. Your stories are inspiring to me. Thank you for sharing your journey with me.
