We had the good fortune of connecting with Randy Land and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Randy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My clients! I chose my clients very carefully by researching and reaching out to hand selected architects, designers and builders that have a unique and thoughtful approach to design. They care deeply about the work they produce and the projects they’re involved in. That passion shows through in everything. Once they become a client, I consider us partners. My whole purpose is to build the same passion for their projects and clients that they have, and to represent that through the photography I produce. I also chose clients that understand and value the critical role that photography plays in their success. These are beautiful people to work with and I invest great time and effort in supporting them. It just works!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
On a personal level, I’ve always pursued creative outlets, including art, woodworking, and photography. I find the creative process extremely satisfying. From the time I was very young, I’ve also had a fascination with architecture. I have early memories of going places with my parents and being more interested in the buildings – the materials, textures, and design – than why we were there, or what was going on around me.

When I decided several years ago to pursue photography professionally, design photography was the perfect fit. I absolutely love it! Retiring early from my work as a software engineer has allowed me to focus on building Rland Creative.

In software design – which is much more creative than people realize – understanding context, story, human behavior and emotion is extremely powerful in informing truly intuitive design. Environmental context, storytelling, and emotion are woven into every aspect of architectural and interior design. These are also the key elements that influence how I approach each shoot.

My job is to understand my client’s approach, and their client’s vision for each project – “the story” – and tell that story through beautifully, articulate imagery. I take that responsibility very seriously and do it very well.

Many photographers have a look or style to their work. What sets my work apart is, while maintaining an intense focus on beautiful, clean, and artistic photography, each shoot is unique. I pride myself in being able to “nail the aesthetic” as one client put it.

For architects and designers, their portfolio is the most impactful element of their branding and marketing. I consider myself a strategic partner with every client, and invest a lot of time and effort in helping them build an amazing portfolio. I keep my client panel limited and exclusive, allowing me to provide them unmatched service – which I do with fierce integrity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a nature child – so we would be spending time in the mountains – road tripping and hiking. As far as places to eat – it’s hard to beat our house! My wife and I both love to cook, although, when it comes to a good steak and laid-back vibe, 1914 House in Niwot is one of my favs. For people-watching? Pearl Street in Boulder!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife for her amazing love and empathy, and for supporting me through every adventure! My grandfather for teaching me how to be self-driven and have an obsession for excellence.
