We had the good fortune of connecting with Raphael Dupuy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raphael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had been working in real estate for about 3 years in a salaried position – which isn’t very common in this industry – when the company laid off a large chunk of their employees, including me. I had been considering starting my own business for a bit but the comfort of a steady income was a very good incentive to stay where I was. After getting laid off, I seriously started thinking about what it would mean to start my own business, if it was a financially manageable solution, what the market looked like at this point in time… I also wanted to put more of myself into my activity, as opposed to being one of the cogs in the machine, especially since I had identified several areas that could be improved in that previous job.
I ended up joining a team that was already established, both so that I could have some support getting started but also to help with accountability, because it is easy to get stuck or complacent when you’re on your own. Overall, starting my own business came out of a desire to put myself out there to meet people and help them find the right home for their current needs. My main goal as a real estate agent is not to make my clients buy a property. My job is to educate them and share my knowledge so they can make informed decisions based on what is best for them at this point in time. I’m there to guide them every step of the way so they know what to expect and feel comfortable with the whole process. Buying real estate is stressful enough as it is!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is my background, both personal and professional: I was born and raised in France, I studied English literature and civilization in college (and went to CSU-Pueblo for a year as an exchange student, so Colorado was my first-ever home in the US, back in 2008!). At 23, after getting my Master’s degree in publishing in France and working for a publishing house in Paris, I applied for a one-year visa to Australia and ended up living there for two and a half years, working in the hospitality industry, on an egg farm, at the state fair…!
At 29, I quit my job as a book editor in Paris, France, and moved with my husband to London, UK, where I created my first business as a freelance book editor. And at 30, we moved to the US where I started a new career in real estate!
These various experiences made me a more well-rounded professional and showed me it was possible to change careers, to change environment, and still be successful. I learned a lot about myself – personally and professionally – and these experiences in different countries, different cultures, made me more patient, more tolerant, more open to other people’s perspectives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever friends and family come to visit me here, I always try to show them the best of my world: I enjoy sharing my favorite hikes in and around Boulder and in the Rocky Mountain National Park, but I also like taking them to a baseball game (or a hockey or basketball game), in Denver. One of my favorite spots in Boulder is Salt – I love that they get their ingredients from local farms, and the food is delicious! Bramble & Hare is another of my favorites in Boulder.
I take my beer-loving friends to First Draft in Denver so they can get a sample of the best beers Colorado has to offer.
Finally, if they want a taste of France, I take them to Jeannot’s, in Lafayette – it has the best-tasting pastries and cakes from back home!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is definitely my biggest supporter and he is one of the people pushing me to always do better, while reminding me to take time for myself, to ensure I take a step back when needed to see things from a different perspective. He’s also very patient with me when I go over various scenarios and he takes the time to consider them and give me constructive feedback.
