Meet Rebecca Bradford | Improv Facilitator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Bradford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I honestly didn’t know I was starting a business until years later.
Over two decades ago, I embarked on an improvisational journey, seeking a creative outlet that didn’t result in a physical artifact needing storage. Unlike paintings or crafts that require space on a wall or shelf, improv offered a transient form of expression—art that existed beautifully in the moment and then vanished.
What began as a personal exploration quickly became a social endeavor. Weekly classes not only honed our improvisational skills but also fostered deep connections. Our informal “play nights” gained popularity, attracting others eager to experience the joy of spontaneous creation.
Recognizing a void in Boulder’s improv scene, I took initiative. We invited instructors, organized performances, and gradually transformed our gatherings into a structured community. Thus, The Improv Collaborative was born—a space where creativity, connection, and spontaneity thrive.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Teaching improv is more than a profession for me—it’s a passion and a creative outlet. I find immense joy in guiding individuals through their creative journeys, helping them rediscover the boundless possibilities of self-expression. By fostering a playful environment reminiscent of childhood, I encourage students to break free from their comfort zones and uncover their inherent brilliance.
I offer two distinctive classes that provide unparalleled experiences in the world of improvisation:
Beginning Improv — The Improv Sampler
This introductory course offers a comprehensive overview of various improv styles, tools, and techniques. Students engage in dynamic exercises that culminate in two live performances, allowing them to apply their newfound skills in front of an audience.
Acting for Improvisers
Delving deeper into the theatrical aspects of improv, this class emphasizes authentic emotional responses and dramatic storytelling. Rather than aiming for comedy, humor emerges naturally from genuine interactions. We explore exercises inspired by renowned acting coaches, integrating them into improvised scenes. This collaborative exploration challenges conventional improv teachings, offering students the opportunity to develop richer characters and more nuanced narratives.
Both classes are designed to unlock creativity, enhance self-awareness, and foster a supportive community of improvisers. Together, we embark on a journey of discovery, embracing the magic of the moment. I love watching students let go of themselves and let their characters take them somewhere they had no plans of going.
I also facilitate engaging improv-based team-building workshops for organizations across the Boulder/Denver metro area. These interactive sessions are designed to boost morale, enhance communication, and foster collaboration among team members. By incorporating improvisational techniques, participants develop skills in active listening, adaptability, and creative problem-solving, all within a supportive and enjoyable environment. Whether for corporate retreats, leadership training, or team development, my workshops offer a dynamic approach to strengthening workplace dynamics and building cohesive teams.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would first do the usual touristy things: go to the Dushanbe Tea House, Pearl Street Mall and Chautauqua. Hike the Shananhan trail to Eldorado Canyon. Walk in Boulder Creek wearing water shoes. Picnic outside of Chautauqua and listen to a concert. The First Friday art tour in Denver. Lookout Mountain in Golden. Drive up Flagstaff to see the Continental Divide. Hike in Rocky Mt National park. Eat at Sherpa’s and Bar Taco. Miniture golf, batting cages and go carts at Gateway. Loveland Sculpture Park. Bowling. Nisi’s.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Elisabeth Bowman
Elisabeth Bowman was instrumental in the early stages of establishing an improv community in Boulder. Her boundless creativity, playful spirit, and insightful guidance helped shape the foundation of the collaborative. As a co-creator, Elisabeth’s dedication and passion were pivotal in fostering a welcoming environment for improvisers to connect and grow.
James Marienthal
James Marienthal generously provided us with a space that became the nurturing ground for our growing community. His support allowed us to expand our membership and host events that brought people together through the art of improvisation. James’s commitment to the arts and community building has left a lasting impact on our organization.
I extend my deepest gratitude to Elisabeth and James for their foundational roles in our story. Their contributions have been vital in shaping The Improv Collaborative into the vibrant community it is today.
