We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Kanov and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
What is balance when you are a working mom? Over the past 9 months, working from home, while our children are remote learning, has pushed the limits of balance. My husband and I are both home with our 7 and 10 year old kids, which is fun [ insert eye roll emoji]. But, he has given me the greatest gift, besides these precious babies, Ear Buds + his presence. Just the fact that he is home, has helped me so immensely. I pack my days as full as possible – I don’t want to miss out on a thing. I know what I need to be grounded to work, and deal with my day. 1. Coffee (My Best Friend, as my daughter calls it.) 2. Exercise: Moving my body, gets me grounded and focused. 3. List: I am a big note writer. The action of placing pen to paper, helps me process and organize.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Creative Arts Therapist – specializing in all things children. Starting Arts & Minds, was initially an opportunity for me to both stay with my children when they were small – and support families through creative play. Challenges are natural in any worthwhile circumstance. I relied on my wide network of resources to support me in areas where I did not have the natural skills. Arts & Minds has evolved over the 6 years since its inception. Educating caregivers and professional in engaging children through creative play is a true passion and mission. We now have a childcare location at Nurture, called Nuturelings. Obviously, the pandemic proved to push us into remote learning. During this time, Arts & Minds offered support for students through in home customized educational support. Tutors, Pods, Nanny Placement. It was a true gift to be able to support my community in this way. Now, we are returning to In Person everything, and Arts & Minds is returning to its roots. Through Nurturelings – we are offering a comprehensive pre and postnatal program in collaboration with the practitioners of Nurture.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My dream! My very favorite activity is cooking and eating with friends. Come to Denver to hang? I got you. The bar at Quality Italian for a cocktail is my absolute favorite place. I popped in to pick up a To Go order this winter, and said to the bartenders, “Do you miss me as much as I miss you!?!” Concerts are my jam, my husband, Scott is in the business, and it’s the most frequent question I am asked lately. “When is live music returning?” Red Rocks is magical, I take everyone to Teddi’s class at Hot Mamas Exercise. Not only do I teach with Teddi, but she really is the best of the best. Her Fusion class is the most fun, kick ass workout in town. I say #nevermissasundayshow for WSP at Red Rocks. Never miss a Friday Fusion class at Hot Mamas Exercise. I love sandwiches, seriously, my favorite food. Lunch at Nest in Nurture is perfection. Tartine and whatever soup Elizabeth Woodward makes is the bomb!!! Can’t go wrong. Shopping is one of my super powers, I go to A Line in Cherry Creek as much as possible to visit my darling friend, Jack. Not just because I adore him, but he reads my mind, and I also walk out with exactly what I need. If you are bringing your children to visit my children. We are going to hire a babysitter :(). But, my favorite place for them is Paco Sanchez Park. Its like the wonderful world of all things climbing and adventure.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The amazing team at Nurture. Where I have my childcare location. This crew of wellness warriors are dedicated to health of the whole human. They have provided the space for me to build out the dream childcare model for our community.
