We had the good fortune of connecting with Regard Tang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regard, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business wasn’t planned. I never thought I would become an entrepreneur. In my mid-20s, I was in a corporate job. Not going to lie, after my first couple of years with the company, I was hoping and wishing every day that they would lay me off. During the Great Recession, pretty much everyone got laid off starting in 2008. My dream had come true, and I got laid off in 2009. I was in the third round of layoffs within the company and got let go
While I was trying to figure out my next step, I knew waking up at 7 am every day wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted. Working from 9-6 and sitting in a cubicle just didn’t sound fun to me. Some people love the sustainable lifestyle, but I knew I wanted something different. So I went back to Hong Kong in 2010 to learn makeup and get my certifications. (I am originally from Hong Kong.) That’s how I started my freelance makeup artist journey. I was in fashion and commercials for a decade and realized I needed to move on from the fashion industry for better mental health. While I was still dragging my feet within the fashion industry, thanks to Covid, it gave me an opportunity to move on to something more fulfilling and meaningful – Coaching. This is where I started my entrepreneurial journey. My coaching business was the training wheels; it only lasted about a year before I started my mediumship business. I have learned so much about running a small business, how to hire a team, what kinds of apps help my business, and what I was doing right and wrong.
Coming from a freelancer background, I already had an expectation of what it’s like not having regular paychecks, how to manage spending during rainy days, and how to get my health insurance. Some days I work more than 8 hours a day. I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered my business because there is so much to learn. However, I have a better idea of how to show up for my business.
Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, and what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Regarding Energy is my current business. I’ve been running this business for a little over two years. In my practice, I specialize in emotional trauma healing and ancestral trauma healing. Being an energy healer and medium is not just a title; I also serve as my clients’ accountability partner and guide. Without my clients telling me much about their background, I have a gift to download the dynamic between my clients and their parents. What kinds of emotions do my clients hold towards their family and why do they feel stuck? I have a gift for breaking everything down and understanding the behind-the-scenes.
What sets me apart from other healers/mediums? I would use three words to describe myself and my brand: genuine, authentic, and caring. I don’t just give my clients a reading and leave them to deal with the information. I’m a heart-centered person; I use love, compassion, and support to guide my clients. Sometimes, when my clients can’t process the sadness, I cry for them during the session so they can release the stuck energies. I don’t believe healing services are just a transaction; when clients come to me, it’s my job to build trust and rapport while delivering the message.
I’m very proud that my parents are fully supporting me. It was a bit of a bumpy road when I was a freelance makeup artist. I come from a Chinese background, and it is hard for a Chinese family to understand what an artist’s life looks like. It was a long journey for my parents to understand, especially for my dad. Having an office job makes sense to them, but how can an artist make a living? I never wanted to live an ordinary life, so it took me lots of time, energy, and communication to get to where we are today. I love my parents, and I have a great relationship with them; having them fully support me in what I do means the world to me.
I’m sure if you ask ten entrepreneurs, 10 out of 10 will answer it is extremely difficult to build a business. I’m so grateful my business is an online service, so I don’t have to store any products or have an actual store. That eliminates lots of headaches on hiring, safety, return, etc. My challenge was getting new clients. Mediumship isn’t something visual or received based on senses. So I have to walk my clients through what are the steps. Just like going to therapy, you will only understand after individual experiences. Moving to Denver is the right choice for my business. I felt like I was hitting a wall when I was building my business in Vegas. When I tell people I’m a medium, most people feel uncomfortable because I have the ability to communicate with loved ones on the other side or people thought I would read them without their consent. I don’t do that because it is invading people’s privacy. On the other hand, people in Denver are way more open-minded and curious. I got asked many times how do I get my gift and what does it look like to communicate with spirits. Even when I was in the doctor’s office. I feel like I’m building a solid foundation even only lived in Denver for 4 months.
I’ve learned so many lessons along the way and am still learning. The biggest lesson I learned is healing within. I heard so many people say, time will heal. After I had been on the self-development journey for over six years. Time is just an asset; if you don’t put hard work into it with lots of self-reflection, reduce self-judgment, and truly learn what self-love means. Time will do nothing for the healing journey. I came across so many spiritual healers who want to heal others while they don’t put time, energy, and inner hard work into healing themselves. Will you go to a doctor with lots of health issues while they don’t take care of themselves? Healing isn’t a visible object, it’s a feeling to find inner peace, balance, and alignment. The world is filled with noise; how can we take the steps we need so we can get out of stuck-ness and quiet the noise that doesn’t serve us? In the last six years, I have learned how to quiet the noise and step away from people pleasing, being passive-aggressive, allowing others to treat me anything less, beating myself up instead of giving myself credit, inserting myself in any toxic environments, and the list goes on. I learned how to communicate my true feelings/needs and align with what serves my highest good. Healing lessons will never be ended; this is a lifelong journey. Just like can you feed yourself for a week and that last rest of the year?
Since we are on the topic of healing, I want the world to know that healing can be scary and messy at times. It isn’t a straight line, and everything isn’t visible all at once. It’s like peeling an onion; you need to get to the core. The more you are willing to put in the hard inner work, the sooner you can break free from toxic patterns. I’ve gone through many uncomfortable and unfamiliar intense emotional healing experiences myself, so now I can empathize with my clients without them having to describe how they feel.
I’m also fortunate to have many close friends and communities to support me, besides my loving parents. I always suggest to all my clients to find a genuine support system, whether it includes family, friends, community, or even a therapist/coach. We as humans need love, safety, and belonging; these are basic human needs and rights. Don’t give up on healing when things get tough.
My current focus is reflected in my brand; I’m all about speaking the truth, compassion, and alignment. Guiding my clients to connect with their emotions and understand the behind-the-scenes help them realign. This world can be cruel and unfair, but having compassion for oneself and others is the cure for judgment. When judgment dissolves, we develop new lenses for managing negative emotions. Lastly, speaking the truth is part of alignment. I don’t tolerate any nonsense, and I choose to walk away gracefully. That means I don’t deceive my clients; I always deliver the truth. Sometimes the truth can be hard to hear, but I’ve learned it’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it. I make sure to energetically hold my clients’ hands and hold them accountable while delivering messages from their spirit guides. I care deeply about my clients, family, and friends, and I want the best for everyone I love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a foodie, and food is my love language. I’m fortunate to live in the Highland/LoHi area, where there is an abundance of excellent food within walking distance. RootDown, Kawa Ni, and El Five are some of my favorites in the area. Although I don’t drink much, Lady Jane, Williams & Graham, and Family Jones serve excellent mocktails. Denver Central Market is a unique experience; it’s like a food court where my best friend and I can choose our preferred food. There are also some charming shops around the area. I would take her to PuddyWax on Walnut Street to make our own candles. Speaking of DIY activities, Upstairs Circus and Stryker are great for DIY projects, which I really enjoy. If it happens to be on the First Friday, a visit to the Art District on Santa Fe is a must. There are numerous amazing art galleries and food trucks. During summertime, a visit to Pearl Street for the farmers market is a must.
Although I’m not much of an outdoorsy person, Georgetown holds a special place in my heart. And, of course, I would take her to Red Rocks for a mini hike and maybe even a concert.
My list is still growing, as I have only been living in Colorado for a short time. I’m sure my list will grow substantially if you ask me the same question in a year.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m very lucky to have different mentors/teachers on my spiritual/business journey. Everyone plays a different role in my life at different times. Currently, the most impactful teacher in my life is Mythica Blessyng. She is one of the most loving souls I have ever met. I’m learning a lot from her not only on the spiritual side but also on how to be open-hearted and give without an agenda. This means giving without expecting anything in return, whether it’s business or personal. When Mythica gives, she truly gives. I also appreciate her for building a community where spiritual souls can gather and ask all kinds of questions. As a medium, I can read lots of metaphysical books and listen to various spiritual podcasts for knowledge. However, having a group of people to discuss topics we are interested in and curious about hits differently.
Besides teachers, I joined a female group last summer called Polka Dot Powerhouse. They are an international networking group, and Colorado has the most members out of all. Polka Dot helped me transition from Las Vegas to Denver smoothly last fall. I had the chance to meet so many amazing women and join multiple communities within a short amount of time. It’s such a blessing! In fact, I met Mythica through Polka Dot shortly after I moved to Denver.
