We had the good fortune of connecting with Rico Wint and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rico, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I think great businesses are created by a need. Especially in the human services world, there is an opportunity to create a space where we can answer a need for the human condition.

In 2009 I was invited back to my high school to speak to a classroom of young men who needed guidance and mentorship. I participated and it was — awful (so I thought)! I told myself I would never do it again, what I thought was a one time event, became a weekly mentorship class for those young men. It just organically matured into something meaningful.

One day, during one of our sessions, one of the students suggested that we name the program something and the name Young Men of Purpose was born — 14 students in a back counseling room are responsible for naming the now 15 Year – 40 Denver Area School – 5000+ Student YMOP Program.

What should our readers know about your business?
YMOP is a Denver metro area-based enrichment program that teaches Black and Brown boys social emotional wellness, leadership and academic success. Since 2009, we have served 40 Denver Area partner schools, 5000 boys and numerous training and consultations for school leadership. YMOP is making a difference in the lives of our students and in the Denver community.

“We intercept society’s message towards Black and Brown Boys.”

I think we were a program started from pure love and determination, there was no end goal other than serving those students, I think the “secret sauce” we have been able to keep that feeling although we have grown and have extrapolated our efforts. It wasn’t easy at all, but I also think my youth and naivety was a shield that actually made me believe I could build something to help young men.

Our mission is: Manhood. Integrity. Purpose. We endeavor to impart this into every young men that we have the privilege of working with. Also that Black and Brown boys are important and worth the investment.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think we’d we go downtown and check out a Nuggets game

We would slide over to Red Rocks for a work out

Maybe a drive through the mountains as the leaves turn colors

Lastly we would check out The Stanley Market and grab some food

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout the men in my life that were inspirational in me developing into a man and leader.

Alfonso Wint, Sr. (Dad) Taught me how to be a man
Antonio Wint (Brother) Taught me how to be smart and thoughtful
Pastor Al Combs (Pastor) Taught me Faith and being grounded
Marcus Green (Mentor) Taught me how to think outside of the box
Marc Small (Teacher & Mentor) Taught me how to be leader

All of these men came into my life (other than my family of course) at critical stages and became stepping stones for me to continue my journey into manhood and self discovery. I literally thank God for them!
