Meet Rob Burleson | Drummer/Centerfold/Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Burleson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I make music and art for myself first. It is a way to express myself – mind, body and soul. I consider it a huge added bonus when it reaches other people in a way that moves them or brings them joy. Also, keep it sexy!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my style is more utilitarian. I play more for the song as a whole and what will help the song punch. I’ve been lucky to play in a lot of different bands over the years and the range of styles has really helped me become a better drummer. From playing cymbals in the avant-garde marching band Itchy-O, shoegaze/alt country in d. biddle, post punk with Lion Sized, filling in with Hearts of Palm, and now pop punk SPELLS, my musical journey has been an absolute adventure. I feel lucky to be a part of the close-knit Denver music scene for 20+ years and so grateful to play with some of the best musicians around.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would hop on our motorcycles and cruise up 285 and grab breakfast at the Shaggy Sheep. Then over Guanella Pass to Golden Gate Canyon, and into Golden to grab a bite and beer at Goose Town Station. For dinner we would head over to Bastiens and eat at the best bar in town. Steak is not for everyone so I’ll take them to Fellow Traveler the next day. Then a bounce around town for music and hangs at Sputnik, Hi-Dive, the Squire or 715.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my mom and my grandfather for giving me the love and encouragement to start playing drums and for introducing me to so much music. And of course to all my fellow bandmates past and present for putting up with me and creating music together. SPELLS RULES.
