We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Lujan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rob, how do you think about risk?
“With great risk comes great reward.” Thomas Jefferson once famously stated. Four years ago I was stuck in a dead end retail job unhappy and very stagnant. With company restructure I came to fork in my road, I was faced with having to make a choice in my life that could change my future. With financial responsibility weighing heavy on my decision the job security seemed to make the most sense. At a time when employment was limited I would have to rely on income from small photo gigs until I was able to secure employment. Photography had always been a creative outlet for me and a hobby that turn into a side job, I had never put too much consideration in to the thought of it being my career. Financially it was a big risk for me to make the decision as to what I wanted to do with my future. I took the leap and decided to invest in my self and my photography and leave the retail world behind. The journey hasn’t been easy but it was the best decision I ever made.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography is such a diverse field but it’s easy to get over looked in such a huge medium. I pride myself in being able to take the studio styles photos out to any location and getting creative with lighting. Using artificial lighting is not an easy skill to master and it’s not for everyone which is another reason it sets you apart as a creative. Understanding how to use lighting takes practice to perfect your craft it is not something that can done quickly. As a creative I enjoy trying to step outside the box and push the bar to try new things and get away from the cookie cutter styles.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best time ever would be complete without the best dinning! I’m no foodie but I do enjoy a good meal. Pizza is probably my go to, my favorite spots are Fat Sullys Pizza and Dion’s Pizza (A New Mexico Founded company). My favorite thing about living in Colorado is all of our amazing landscapes we have to offer, from the Great Plains out east to our beautiful Rocky Mountains in the west. No Colorado trip would be completely with out a little taste of the outdoors. Southwestern Colorado has some of the best jeep trails to off road and see some great views. After a day on the trails you have to set up camp under the beautiful starts and maybe just maybe catch a few photos of the Milky Way on a perfect night.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout out to a special friend of mine, Jeremiah Corder. Jeremiah is also a Colorado photographer with a very diverse portfolio. He is the first person to put a camera in my hand and encourage me to shoot out of my comfort zone!
