We had the good fortune of connecting with Todd Scalise and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Todd, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Engaging in risk is essential for any endeavor that requires independent and creative thinking. Successful risk-taking involves making calculated decisions that blend inspiration with methodical reasoning. Although risks are abundant, calculated risks must be intentionally crafted. Being inherently mercurial, I naturally gravitate towards risks and enjoy exploring uncharted territory. Five years ago, I left behind the Northeast, where I had established Higherglyphics, a business focused on designing and merchandising public art projects, to relocate to the Southwest. This move allowed me to fully commit to my passion for painting, which has always been my first love. This transition was not easy for me, as I moved alone from a venture in a familiar environment to an unknown one. Along the way, I faced numerous challenges, but staying focused on my goal kept me moving forward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most excited about the prospect of the best work to come. My journey to this point has been shaped by exploring various creative avenues, including exhibiting paintings, graphic design, and orchestrating large-scale public art projects. Additionally, I spent seven years teaching at the college level, which significantly contributed to my development. Owning a creative business was the pinnacle of these experiences, as it brought together all my skills. None of these accomplishments have been easy, but I recognize that worthwhile endeavors rarely are, even for the most talented individuals. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that fostering healthy relationships is crucial for others to participate in and support your dreams. After all, there’s no point in creating without an audience to engage with and appreciate your work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Exploring the Southwest offers a multitude of exciting options. I am drawn to the landscape for its ability to nourish the mind, body, and spirit. If I were to plan a trip with my best friend, we would start by backcountry camping at Bandelier National Monument, then unwind at Ojo Caliente for the hot springs experience, followed by gallery hopping in Santa Fe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to a guiding principle that consistently finds me during critical moments. It can be encapsulated in Emerson’s quote, “A man is what he thinks about all day long.” This statement highlights the profound interplay between intention and attraction. Goethe also emphasized this idea, stating that “the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves all. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.” Though sometimes challenging to trust, particularly in times of stress, this principle remains my guiding light, even when things appear not to work out as expected.
