We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob McCormack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For years friends had been pushing us to sell our Hatch Chile backpacking and rafting food recipes. Rob was a flyfishing guide years before settling down with Tania. An opportunity to guide in the Russian Far East (a long dream of his) became available to Rob. Tania set a deal: Rob could quit his desk job and go to Russia if they started FishSki Provisions when he returned… and here we are almost 4 years later with FishSki Provisions available nationwide in 400+stores and online.
What should our readers know about your business?
We’re Tania and Rob a husband a wife team and we started FishSki Provisions to bring together our three favorite things: Southwestern food, flyfishing, and skiing (hence our name). All our comfort foods require just a couple-ish cups of boiling water to prepare; are packed in recyclable, portable, weather resistant bags; are high in protein; all natural; vegetarian; and are full of Southwestern flavor from the best New Mexico chiles grown. We currently sell four awesome meals: Hatch Green Chile, Garlic, Cheddar Mac and Cheese; Hatch Red Chile, Bell Pepper, Cheddar Mac and Cheese; Jalapeno, Hatch Green Chile, Cheddar, Yellow Corn Grits; and Hemp Extract, Hatch Green Chile, Garlic, Cheddar Mac and Cheese with 35 mg CBD (the perfect post big day outside meal). Finally, looping back to our name FishSki Provisions: we give at least 3% of every sale to local conservation or access efforts that improve flyfishing and/or skiing opportunities.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love showing off our great public lands, chile, and local beers. When friends visit we head to the mountains for a week of skiing and/or flyfishing. We typically like to ski a day or two at a resort and a day or two in the backcountry. Depending on time of year we’ll head backpacking to favorite alpine lakes or hop in the raft seeking trout. We’ll be eating plenty of green and red chile, likely some FishSki Provisions 🙂 and plenty of local brews (we always love La Cumbre, Oskar Blues, Santa Fe, and Odell)! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are extremely thankful for our supportive customers. We’ve grown from less than 10 stores in Colorado to selling in all 50 states almost entirely via word of mouth of our supportive customers, without them we would not exist and we are continually thankful.
