We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Hanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose a creative career because it was the only thing that made sense to me. My biggest fear growing up was to be trapped in a job I hated or one that compromised my views and ideals, only to subvert those things for financial gain. While I probably could have ended up making a lot more money over my professional career, I feel like I’ve been doing the kind of work I’ve always wanted, to the point where sometimes it doesn’t feel like work. At the end of the day if I’m able to use my creative abilities to help someone build their brand or communicate their story, then I’m happy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began my education in creative writing, and even though I later pivoted into visual art, it proved to be the backbone for all of the work that would follow. Photography, videography, filmmaking, graphic design – these are all pillars of storytelling and having an established background in writing really helped propel me that way.

My obsession with photography began in high school but it wasn’t until after college that I fell back in love with analog photography, and proceeded to study it as a fine art medium. That was back in 2002 and I haven’t really looked back since. From photography came graphic design, and as with the patterns in my career, I’ve continuously gone back to school, or taken courses, studied, and learned new skills to move forward. My graphic design career began in 2005 and led me to video creation some years later. My main strategy has been to adapt and keep learning to make sure your talents don’t become obsolete with the tide changes of technology and cultural trends.

My creative aesthetic is more moody than most, I gravitate to the darker side of life so that is often reflected in my photography and videography work. I like to seek out the beauty in things that aren’t normally considered as such.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver has some amazing restaurants, particularly Mexican! I’d start and end the trip at El Taco de Mexico, go record shopping at Wax Trax, Twist and Shout, or Chain Reaction, book shopping at Tattered Cover, drinks at Sputnik, Don’s Mixed Drinks, maybe a concert at the Ogden Theater! During the day go for a jog in Cheesman Park, or drive out to Morrison and hike the Red Rocks Trail.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a massive shoutout to my parents Bruce and Kay Hanna, my sisters Julie and Supatra, my partner and bandmate Karina, and all of the clients who gave me an opportunity to work with them!
