We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin DeCicco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I knew I wanted to provide potential clients with the most well-rounded and integrative recommendations to improve their lives from a nutrition/lifestyle standpoint and wasn’t sure if that existed in the ‘ wellness’ space at the time I was trying to figure out what to do with my career; therefore, I kind of knew it had to be me, myself and I. I didn’t trust working under someone else’s paradigm, especially if I didn’t agree with the way in which another type of business/facility ran client sessions, etc. For me, I am so passionate about what I do and giving it 100%, that I knew I had to only work under an umbrella of something I very much agreed with, which turned out to be my umbrella: The Power of Food Education.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Power of Food Education promotes overall health through making informed food decisions by combining the most recent scientific findings with specific (interventions that lead to health and balance. )As a result, individuals and families learn how to become proactive about their health by learning to approach food with a different mindset – – one that does not acknowledge fad diets, but one that understands the choices we make shape the rest of our lives. By utilizing the most recent scientific findings, Robin is able to promote healthy choices and mental techniques that lead to health and balance. Clients learn the benefits of eating whole foods rather than diet foods that trade nutrients for artificial ingredients, understand how whole foods act as preventive medicine in the body, and implement long-lasting changes that result in optimal health.
My business sets me apart because I am a no BS person! There’s no other way to put it. I am here to tell the truth and actually help to push people to the driver’s seat of their lives. I don’t believe in hiding facts, in tip-toeing around uncomfortable topics – instead, I want people to realize that they have one life/one body and it’s our job to protect that.
I could not be more passionate about what I do – clients realize this right away. I talk to my clients like I talk to my parents, ‘How can you even conceive of eating that fruit flavored yogurt with 35 grams of sugar? Have we NOT said this is worse than eating cake??!!’ I sincerely care about the health of my patients so much so that I have no separation between my ‘ work’ and my ‘ life.’ They are the same! I have no boundaries, tell it like it is and provide the raw deal. My biggest role as a ‘food educator’ is demystifying marketing claims on food brands. I want to reach the masses by teaching that food brands don’t care about your health – but I DO!
I’m a spitfire of a person who is engaging and makes complex nutrition topics relatable and funny. This is why my patients/clients keep coming back! I’m never going to be quiet, shy or boring and bring so much passion, enthusiasm and great content to individual sessions, media appearances and workshops.
My brand is ME. I don’t just talk the talk – I live it. That is so important for people to know about my brand. I never understood how patients/clients/audiences could really trust a health professional who is not living what they preach. I am the one running up and down the staircase in my building to get in extra movement, making time to bulk cook every week and making sure I eat the highest quality foods.
It was definitely challenging to start my own private practice because I had to rely on myself to booking clients. It was a very slow process, as anyone building a business will tell you. I worked very hard at building and forming connections with local gyms, doctors, mom groups, etc. in order to make it known that I am the ‘ expert’ to be seen. Operating a private practice relies on getting business thru ‘word’ of mouth’, so in order for that to happen, I’ve had to rely strongly on meeting people, staying in touch with contacts, following up with people I meet and keeping people happy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family for sure deserve a shoutout, because they taught me from a young age that the meaning of food can change over time – and sometimes, when health issues occur, you have to re-shape your mindset regarding food, implement replacements and learn that not everything can always be how it once was – and that is OK. They also deserve a big shoutout for putting up with me, because I don’t them live anything down! If they buy the wrong brand of almond milk, you bet they hear it from me!!
