We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruth (RJ) Lawlor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruth (RJ), what matters most to you?
What matters most to me in my art practice is the profound sense of gratitude I feel for the beauty that surrounds me. Living in an area blessed with natural splendor has deeply influenced my values and perspectives. My primary goal as an artist is to express this gratitude and the joy it brings when I connect with the natural world. My specialization lies in abstract painting, which allows me to capture the essence of nature in a unique manner. Rather than depicting specific landscapes with mountains or lakes, my non-representational art aims to immerse viewers in that moment of wonder and reverence that arises when we truly connect with nature.

In my artistic process, I have a deep appreciation for the simplicity and clarity inherent in a limited black and white color palette. However, I often incorporate gold foil into my work as a medium to convey a sense of transcendence and significance. This choice of material enables me to evoke feelings of wonder, awe, and a potential connection to the spiritual realm in those who engage with my art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I enjoyed a fulfilling career as an art educator, but my commitment to teaching left me with limited opportunities to explore my own creative endeavors. As a result I never truly considered myself a genuine artist. After retiring from a twenty five year teaching career I finally had the freedom to dedicate time to my artistic pursuits.  However, I hesitated to adopt the label of an artist and it wasn’t until my inaugural group exhibition, during which I sold a substantial painting, that I gained the confidence to fully embrace my identity as an artist. This pivotal moment served as a resounding affirmation and motivated me to wholeheartedly pursue my passion.
Launching a new career in retirement was intimidating and challenging. Initially, I was guarded about revealing that I had only been painting for a few years. Now, I’m happy and grateful to claim it. I have found the art community to be welcoming and supportive, and I’m thankful that I’ve experienced so much success. This new career has rewarded me with new experiences, connections, and friends, and I would be the first to encourage anyone who may think it’s too late to start something to follow their passion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting, there are a couple of local spots I’d definitely them to see and experience. One of my personal favorites is the Santa Fe Art District, and I believe that Safta is one of Colorado’s top dining destinations. And, of course, for a fantastic concert experience, Red Rocks is the ultimate venue to visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been numerous individuals who’ve played a pivotal role in influencing and supporting my creative journey—family, teachers, collectors, and friends. However, if I were to dedicate a specific Colorado Shoutout, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kerri Lawlor at Ridgegate Endodontics in Lonetree. It’s not common to find office spaces and waiting rooms adorned with art that truly enriches the environment, but Dr. Lawlor has gone above and beyond by curating an elegant setting with original artworks that reflect her dedication to creating a beautiful ambiance.

Furthermore, I extend my appreciation to Niza Knoll Gallery in the arts district for  including my work in several exhibitions. Their commitment to promoting and showcasing artists like me has been invaluable to my artistic journey.
