We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Ellis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always knew I wanted to start a business but I had a hard time determining what that business would be. I dabbled in a few ventures related to activities I enjoyed doing, but they generally had high start up costs or required working weekends when all my friends were doing the activities I enjoyed. I realized that my passion was small business and maybe there was a way I could run a business helping small business owners. After working in a bike shop I realized that there were a lot of marketing strategies I was doing that didn’t necessarily require a lot of money and were making a significant impact on my employer’s bottom line. I was sure there were plenty of other businesses that could benefit from my help. So armed with a computer and enough money to cover my rent for a couple months, I started Red Egg.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Red Egg Marketing is a full-service digital marketing agency providing branding, website design, and marketing services tailored to the needs of your business. We’re a Denver marketing agency committed to being your trusted partner and digital marketing resource. Our multifaceted team of talented creatives will integrate seamlessly into your organization, adding the full suite of marketing services you need with the flexibility you want. We shun one-size-fits-all packages in favor of custom-tailored marketing strategies with expert implementation to help your business reach its goals. We earn our clients’ business each month. We have multiple clients that have been working with us a month-to-month basis for over 11 years. I believe that is a testament to our quality, honestly, fairness, and effectiveness.
I am very proud of our consistent growth without having to sacrifice quality. We consistently do the right thing, even when no one is looking. I’m also proud to be able to provide my team with great benefits that include full healthcare and a 401k with a significant match.
It wasn’t easy getting to where Red Egg is today. It took time and patience. While we always hear about people having overnight success on the news, it happens very rarely. Most small businesses fail within the first year or two. Being patient and making calculated risks is important. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t promise something I wasn’t 100% sure I could deliver. You’ve got to have the confidence in yourself that you’ll figure it out. Otherwise, you’ll suffer from analysis paralysis.
Learning to trust others and empower your team to be successful is so important. Business owners that micromanage their employees end up working long hours, lose talented employees, are way to stressed, and can’t scale successfully. Staying out of my own way (and everyone else’s) is something I still continually work on. Now that I have a great team, we’re able to provide a significantly better service that what I could possibly do on my own.
Be confident but humble. In the early years of Red Egg I started my car with a screwdriver (and kept it until the day I had to give a potential client a ride home. Yikes!). I’ve met so many CEO’s of one person companies that are all show and no go. The most successful people I’ve met have always been really quiet about their success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve always felt that the best way to explore an area is by bike. For years my friends and I would do a big ride all over the city stopping at breweries along the way. I love the smaller neighborhood spots like Diebolt, Strange, and Call to Arms. I’m a huge fan of Blue Pan pizza. Best burger in town is at the Monkey Barrel in Sunnyside. I also like places with a cool view like Linger or a fun ambiance like Happy Camper. However, most of the time when friends come to visit, we head for the hills to go skiing or mountain biking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The individual list would be too long. No one gets to where they are without a lot of help. From family and friends to teachers and mentors, so many people helped to get me to where I am today. I am very grateful to my wife for her unwavering support, our early clients, many of which we still work with, that took a chance on me early on, and my amazing team for their continued support, hard work, and commitment to doing what’s best for our clients.
