Meet Ryan Wilson | Director of Team Trust Productions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Team Trust after a production shoot in Winter Park, Colorado. We were filming and exploring trust as it is expressed between visually impaired athletes and their able-sighted guides. We strapped GoPros on these pairs as they ripped down ski slopes at 60-plus miles per hour. They are not tethered together; rather, they are separated by about six feet. They communicate via a Bluetooth headset. It was an awesome spectacle to absorb, and I realized, after talking with the skiers about this very visible expression of trust, the story we were telling was very personal. I have a disability, and, at times, have to rely on people for help. I wanted to find a way to capture the sense of community that exists in the disability community, and authentically share that with everyone. We want companies to better understand the disability community. That way, our friends with disabilities are better served.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Prior to launching Team Trust, I was a writer for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. I spoke with some of the greatest Paralympic athletes in the world, and it was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the disability community at large. This helped craft Team Trust’s strategies and projects. I would not consider the trajectory of my career easy. There have been many challenges and risks, but, if it were easy, I would not be doing it right. Growth comes from feeling uncomfortable, and I challenge myself and my team to grow everyday. The biggest challenge I faced was learning the ins and outs of running a quickly growing national business. I had no knowledge of negotiating deals, structuring deals or financing deals before Team Trust. So I found mentors who did, and I learned, ultimately, it’s not about making money. It’s not about getting rich. At the end of the day, it’s really about helping people, better their lives, and building relationships.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend coming to town, I would invite them to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum. It’s an awesome place, and I think my friend would enjoy seeing artifacts from Venus Williams, Tatyana McFadden and the Miracle on Ice Game. I would also require this friend to grab pizza at Slice 420 and chicken tacos at Phantom Canyon. Collectively, this would make for the most interesting, most delicious visit to Colorado Springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am very grateful for all the people we have met though Team Trust. Every person we encounter is in some way, shape or form a member of our Team. We could not do our work without the encouragement and feedback from the disability community.
