We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Silk by Laura was actually a fluke! As a full time graduate student and working a full-time job, I never imagined randomly beginning a business to add to my already busy schedule. After formulating what I believed was the perfect shea butter mix, my close friends and family confirmed it when they raved about how great it was and the various ways they were able to use it. I knew my whipped shea butter was something that I had to share publicly, but I also knew it was going to take planning and preparation. As a one woman show, I recognized that the challenge was great, but I am also aware of my skillset and as my father always says, “Preparation meets opportunity.” Now, here I am, two months after launching my product, with a heavy influx of orders and keeping up with the flow of business. Silk by Laura has grown more than I have ever imagined, and I am excited to see where it goes!

What should our readers know about your business?
In starting Silk by Laura, I began by just wanting to develop an all-natural body butter that I could truly enjoy for myself. I have always been a huge fan of whatever body butter made my skin feel great and even came across variations of whipped shea butter when traveling throughout the United States. Yet, every time I came back home to Colorado, I never knew of anyone selling the product that I enjoyed. I started doing some research on the best ways to create your own shea butter at home and what natural products were great for skin. I needed to be comfortable knowing that I was applying a product that would nourish my body. Additionally, I wanted to add a great scent, but again, I needed it to be all natural. I started looking at essential oils and understanding the means behind using aromatherapy within my product. With that, I wanted my scents to be unique. I wanted something that was indefinitely a signature to my brand. When I hear the word ‘whipped’, I think of whipped cream — and I wanted my whipped shea butter to be as close to that as I could possibly get it. I started experimenting with different shea butters and processes to create a product that I knew was different from any other shea butter I had tried before, whether it was homemade or manufactured. I had many mishaps in my journey of creating my shea butter, but mishaps that were all for the better! I am fond of remembering the quote by Bob Ross, “We don’t make mistakes; just happy accidents.” Moreover, I have been able to make early leaps and bounds in my business by strong marketing and really validating that I have a great product. Not only do I want my clients to truly enjoy my shea butter, but I want them to feel like they are receiving a gift when they receive their order. Everyone deserves to feel special and it makes me happy when I see my clients loving what they purchased.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a Colorado native, you must know that we have so many things to do! For the best time ever, we are going to head West toward the mountains, stop in Blackhawk for a little gambling – I’m not a gambler myself, but hey, it’s for the experience! We’re going to continue into Silverthorne for a little bit of outlet shopping and a visit to the Ice Castles, so long that it is the season. Moving on, we might have to make a pitstop in Leadville for snowmobiling or Breckenridge/Vail for a day of skiing/snowboarding. If it’s the summer, you cannot skip taking a hike to Hanging Lake. Finally, after all the activities from the week, I’d want to make a stop in Glenwood Springs to soak in the hot springs and explore the Adventure Park before ultimately heading back home to Denver!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely have to dedicate my shoutout to a few people! Of course, I have to give a shoutout to my dad and two sisters, Camille and Brooke. We as a family have really found unique ways to support and push each other forward through all of the hard times. Brooke, thanks for always keeping it real and being the second opinion on almost everything! I also have to give a shoutout to everyone so close to me who has encouraged me to navigate my endless list of endeavors! Jeff, whom has always kept me uplifted and helped me through so many of my mishaps! Miriah, Takara and Curtis, whom have helped me get my business up and running in the early stages. Tonoa, whom has always encouraged me to keep trucking toward my goals and has nourished so many amazing business conversations.
