We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Rodriguez Bouzekri and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I honestly did not plan on starting a business, at least not this soon. But when I saw the demand, how fast the success spread and how eager people were to try my cookies, I knew I had to get Twinkle Treats off the ground as soon as I could legally do so! I was eagerly waiting on my work permit which came barely 2 weeks before I officially registered my business. Before then, I would only take orders from family and friends and only charge for ingredients. My very first order was in December of 2021 for a birthday cake, I have received hundreds of orders since and I couldn’t be more grateful.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Through the chaos of my life, baking has always been the one thing that has helped ground me and reassure me. Following a recipe helps me be in control, when the whole world feels like it’s shattering around me. Baking through so many storms gave me the skill set I have today, and the fluency and ease with which I can take on and honor orders. After starting with Custom Decorated Sugar Cookies, I went on to sell them at Pop-ups, farmers markets, and eventually expanded my menu to specialty cakes and more recently, French Macarons. The most challenging part of it all, is trying to find the balance between working a full time job as an educator and being a small business owner, a wife and a daughter who lives abroad. Having to decline taking orders or setting firmer boundaries is tough, but it’s essential for the longevity of my business and for my own health. My business today is a representation of my life, what has led me to do what I do. The sugar cookies are what I practiced the most after moving to the US, when I couldn’t drive or work or study for months and only had baking to occupy my days. Macarons are the French touch that I bring with me from across the pond, and cakes are an ode to all the birthday and celebration cakes I’ve made for my Moroccan family members for the past 15 years.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any time I do something fun in Denver or in CO, I immediately think of my best friend Florine and how she’d love it when she’ll come visit. Starting with breakfast, I love the coffee from Pablo’s coffee and pastries from Wooden Spoon bakery. I would take her on a stroll downtown Denver, or to the Museum of Nature and Science, after a walk through City Park. For refreshments, I know she loves Starbucks, but I know she has yet to try my favorite, the Pink Drink! If the stars align and the timing is right, we’d be able to go to a Drag Queen Bingo or a Dragstravaganza show with some of my favorite local queens at Syrup in Edgewater. I’d love to take her to Estes Park and Crested Butte, two towns I have fallen in love with. And because I am surprisingly good at it, I’d take her camping and fishing near the Colorado river, and (hopefully) catch some trout!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people to thank, close and far. But I guess I would like to thank my in-laws, whose patience and unwavering support has led me to where I am today. From driving me to my first deliveries, picking up ingredients, being incredibly patient while I crowded their kitchen or even helped me with dishes, I feel so fortunate to be surrounded by these incredible people (and taste testers!). They’ve both shaped my husband into who he is today and I’ll forever be grateful.
