Meet Sadie Southard | Owner/Stylist at Shear Wisdom Salon and Refill Bar

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Southard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sadie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Reuse. Reduce. Recycle have always been instilled in my life growing up. When I decided to open Shear Wisdom Salon I wanted to offer a sustainable environment. I was intrigued by the idea of refillable shampoos and conditioners as well as finding a way to reduce and recycle our beauty waste. We were able to partner with O’beehave Naturals that offer refillable options by, purchasing an aluminum bottle that can be reused over and over or bringing in your own bottles to reuse. This is what inspired me to take a giant leap into ownership while reducing our plastic waste and carbon footprint. Green Circles Salons also play a huge role in this passion of Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. They pick up our beauty waste monthly, hair, foils, color tubes, caps to color tubes, plastic, paper. For example, foils are repurposed into bicycle parts and hair cuttings are woven into booms to soak up oil spills in our oceans.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that it’s not hair, it’s art. I’ve had a passion for hair as my medium since a young age. My passion for making people feel beautiful and listened to, has been my drive to overcome difficult times in the industry. Early in my career I was certified as a Board Certified Haircolorist which sets myself aside from most. This certification was NOT easy to get, learning a standardized language in hair color that paves the path for future colorists. Anyone can color hair but to fully understand the chemistry that goes behind coloring hair is a humbling experience. The largest lessons I’ve learned in this industry is to be patient, listen to understand, and to continue to keep an open mind while trends constantly evolve. My goal is when a person walks into Shear Wisdom Salon and Refill Bar is that they feel comfortable to be here. Trust that our team will listen to your wants and biggest fears and be able to create confidence within themselves when they walk out.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love when friends come to visit! I live and work in Downtown Littleton, CO the town is thriving and energetic and it’s fun to walk down Main Street to tour shops and restaurants. My favorite must go spots for shopping is Willow & Tulaire and The General Store 45. Food spots would be Grande Station and Old Town Tavern, two very different spots but never disappoint. Of course once we’ve explored the town we’d have to make a trip up to Red Rocks for a hike and the amphitheater.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I started doing hair while still in high school, I wouldn’t be here without the support of my community at Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning. Anne Burnett who was my science teacher played a huge role in encouraging my career as a hair stylist. My parents were also extremely supportive from the beginning Melissa Childers and John McComas. When it came to opening Shear Wisdom Salon and Refill Bar I was very lucky to have their support in my vision. Ame and Dennis Metcalfe, and Toni Mondragon are my mentors that taught me advanced techniques in the hair industry to be successful in the trade. O’beehave Naturals gave me the foundation of being able to offer refillable shampoos and conditioners. Green Circles Salons takes beauty waste to a whole new level by giving it a new life. Without these foundations Shear Wisdom Salon and Refill Bar wouldn’t be able to offer the sustainable environment I had envisioned.
