We had the good fortune of connecting with Sahar Hasan Al-louthai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sahar, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
One of the most challenging thing I’ve been encountering throughout my life is finding a state of equilibrium and be able to equally prioritizes the demands of my career as an artist as well as the demands of my personal life as a mother. Not to mention, studying, working in and outside the house, which has all led to a lot of stress at times, but also great relief and confidence after important achievements.

Life-work balance has definitely changed over time coinciding with other changes in my personal life since a young age, so there were times I had more dedication to my family and times were I was so busy with my art projects. However, I always seek to find a balance where I can give everything equal time and efforts. But yo be honest, it’s not an easy task for a female artist with young kids, but the taste of success after each accomplishment is precious.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art has been a part of me since childhood, and I consider myself a passionate artist who’s always seeking creativity. Most of my artworks are a representation of the Islamic Art and the Yemeni cultural and aesthetic aspects that fuel my artistry side. I’m always in a journey to interpret universal emotions and ideas into shapes, decorative calligraphy, and patterns derived from my background that I’m most proud of. I have explored many ideas, subject matters and methods during the years until I found my own artistic voice that consist of two parts. The artistic part that represents my cultural side and the expressive part that represents my humanly side.
Being a female artist from Middle East in USA makes it a challenge to me to succeed in a very competitive environment, yet I feel satisfied and proud of the milestone I have reached so far. It took me years of trials and errors and lots of achievements and disappointments.
I always remind myself that I have great potentials to utilize art and make a powerful change. It wasn’t easy to get to where I am today, and I haven’t yet reached all the goals I set for myself, however I have learned valuable lessons. It’s crucial to be organized, know your strengths, set goals periodically and take small steps towards achieving them. It can be very challenging for a busy working mom, but the taste of success is precious.
I am extremely proud of the title I have received as the Yemeni ambassador of fine arts in USA after launching“ Qamaria for arts” project in late 2021 through which I aim to support and represent talented artists who have been suffering the scourge of wars by showcasing their works in Art Exhibitions in different states of USA and different countries.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve had friends visiting New York and I’m always excited to show them parts of this extraordinary city that is so fascinating with its multicultural aspect and artistic prowess. There are countless of places you can visit and countless of activities you can do, but there are certain things I put them in the beginning of my list such as, The Metropolitan museum, Rockefeller Center Graffiti Hall of Fame, American museum of Natural History, MOMA, The Frick collection, the broadways shows near Times Square, a walk throughout Brooklyn bridge and 5th avenue and of course Central park in Manhattan where you can spend the whole day enjoying a myriad entertainment options. There is a interested diversity in cuisine in this city, so you get to try new dishes from different countries all in one place. An important experience is also taking the subway, enjoying the live musical local bands and walls art and taking a ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, my family who have been my first source of encouragement and support since childhood, and of course my husband who is always there for me. I’d like to say thank you for all the love I have received from them that helped me overcome lots of difficulties and obstacles. Also my friends, and all the amazing people I met throughout my journey who have made such a beautiful impact on my life as an artist.
