Meet Sam Westfall | Amplifying accuracy through archery as therapy and moving targets.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Westfall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My journey with archery began over a decade ago, serving as a vital form of personal therapy during my time as an Army veteran. Throughout 2024, I attended various archery events and observed a significant gap: the lack of dedicated, therapeutic archery opportunities for the military and veteran community. I recognized the immense potential for archery to provide healing and camaraderie, and I wanted to create an organization that specifically addressed this need. That’s how Valor Archery Challenge was born – to offer a supportive and empowering space for veterans to experience the benefits of archery.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional journey has been a testament to resilience and adaptation. After a medical separation from the Army, following a severe injury from a tank towbar, I faced a challenging transition. Not only did I lose my military career, but I also navigated a divorce, leading to deep depression, anxiety, and stress. This was a time when resources for veterans were far less accessible than they are today. The military provides a structured environment, dictating who, what, when, where, and why. In the civilian world, you must forge your own path, which can be incredibly daunting. Finding a direct translation for an M1 Abrams tank mechanic in the civilian sector proved difficult, so I pivoted to the burgeoning IT industry, where I saw potential for a smoother transition.
For several years, I struggled with alcoholism and firearms, until a friend introduced me to archery. That moment was transformative. Archery offered a sense of peace I had never experienced. The intense focus required to align mind and body, to send an arrow downrange, became a form of meditation. Moreover, the archery community is exceptionally supportive, welcoming newcomers and seasoned shooters alike.
This personal transformation inspired Valor Archery Challenge. I wanted to share the healing power of archery with fellow veterans and military members, providing a supportive community and a therapeutic outlet. What sets Valor Archery Challenge apart is its focus on serving those who have served. We understand the unique challenges veterans face, and we offer a space where they can find camaraderie, healing, and empowerment.
I’m most proud of creating a platform that directly addresses the needs of the veteran community. It wasn’t easy. The lessons I’ve learned include the importance of resilience, the power of community, and the transformative potential of finding a passion that aligns with your values. I want the world to know that Valor Archery Challenge is more than just a business; it’s a mission. It’s about giving back to those who have sacrificed so much, providing them with a path to healing and a sense of belonging. Our brand is built on respect, support, and the unwavering belief in the power of archery to transform lives.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Alright, if my best friend were visiting Colorado Springs for a week, and luckily it wasn’t during a Valor Archery Challenge event, we’d have an epic time.
Day 1: Exploring Colorado Springs’ Natural Wonders. We’d start with the iconic Garden of the Gods, taking in the stunning red rock formations. Then, we’d ascend Pikes Peak, either by car or the cog railway, for breathtaking panoramic views.
Day 2: Manitou Springs Charm. A trip to Manitou Springs is a must. We’d grab lunch at either Hell’s Kitchen Pizza or The Loop for some fantastic local cuisine, and then enjoy a craft beer at Manitou Brewing.
Day 3: Wildlife and Luxury. A visit to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, recently ranked the #2 best zoo in North America, is a must. Afterwards, we’d take a scenic drive around the luxurious Broadmoor resort.
Day 4: Unique Colorado Adventures. For a day trip, we’d venture out to the incredible Bishop Castle in Rye, or head south to the surreal landscape of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and the quirky Colorado Gator Farm.
Day 5: Veteran-Owned Delights. We’d dedicate a day to supporting local veteran-owned businesses, sampling craft beers at Red Leg Brewing and spirits at 1350 Distilling.
Day 6: Scenic Mountain Loop. For an unforgettable scenic drive, we’d take Highway 24 west through Woodland Park, down to Alma (South Park), then up to Breckenridge and Frisco. From there we would continue to Winter Park and Granby, and then back through the majestic Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park. This route offers stunning scenery, wildlife viewing, continental divide crossings, and charming mountain towns.
Day 7: Relax and Reflect. We would spend the final day relaxing, and reflecting on the great week, possibly doing some light hiking, or visiting a local park.
Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas offer an incredible mix of natural beauty, unique attractions, and a vibrant local scene. It’s a place where you can find adventure, relaxation, and everything in between.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely. My journey with Valor Archery Challenge wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support and guidance I’ve received from a network of invaluable resources. Over the past two years, organizations like the SBDC (Small Business Development Center), VBOC (Veteran Business Outreach Center), SCORE, Bunker Labs, IVMF (Institute for Veterans and Military Families), Warrior Rising, Second Service Foundation, The Rosie Network, and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Boot Camp have been instrumental in equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of running a business. Each of these groups has contributed significantly to my growth as an entrepreneur.
Beyond these organizations, I owe a massive debt of gratitude to two individuals who have been my unwavering pillars of support. My wife, Tara, has been absolutely phenomenal, providing unwavering encouragement and belief in this endeavor. And my shooting buddy, Bob Garrett, has been right beside me every step of the way, offering camaraderie and practical support. Their belief in Valor Archery Challenge has been a driving force, and I am deeply grateful for their presence on this journey.
