We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Hutchinson-Ouranos Hutchinson-Ouranos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha Hutchinson-Ouranos, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Monterrey, Mexico. Because of this I’m a bilingual artist. It gives me an insight to different cultures, language, information and content.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everything I create is a reflection of my beliefs and my spiritual journey. I have always used art as a way to process my emotions, my experiences, my frustrations; later when close friends got a glimpse of some pieces they encourage me to do it full time. It was easy in the sense that it flows, is in me, there’s always something I want to draw, illustrate or paint, but it wasn’t easy in the way to make it work with life. I’m a mother of twins, and they are my first priority, so I always have to balance so many things in order to find that space to create.
I’m a human being that’s interested in constantly learning and evolving. My spirit speaks through art, and my brand and art will always be part of social justices.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them for breakfast to: Maria Empanadas, Tonantzin Casa de Cafe, The bindery and for breakfast tacos to El Metate.
Explore: Walk on Santa Fe and visit Abstract gallery, museums, get reiki by Curios Nature Co, get readings at Alchemy Ritual Goods, Brewery tour around Rhino, see more art at Meow Wolf, and murals around the city, maybe a concert at Botanical Gardens of Denver.
Have amazing Italian food at Parisi on Tennyson. Have a drink at Union Station. Mezcal cocktails and tacos at La Doña Mezcalería.
Hiking in Golden. Day trips to Breckenridge, picnic at Evergreen lake, go to Boulder and got to the Tea House. Sunflower farm in Longmont.
Ice Cream with booze at Sweet Action, and have a champagne flight in Corridor 44.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s many people that have been instrumental in who I am as a person and as an artist. I believe every place, every experience and person we meet leaves a piece of the life-puzzle you’re putting together.
At a personal level, my family, has always encourage my creativity. My husband no only supports but helps me finding the space to create, him and my daughters are my constant inspiration.
As an artist, Museo de las Américas has been the reason why I took art seriously, Claudia Moran and Carina Bañuelos-Harrison have been my mentors and sort of god fairies. My sister Jennifer plays a very important role in all of my projects, I would say nothing goes out without her looking at it.
As an illustrator, my close friends have always encourage me to keep creating. Suzanne Ghawi a children’s writer in Jordan has been in my life creating stories and giving me the opportunity to illustrate them.
