We had the good fortune of connecting with Samantha Schalnus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance can be extremely tricky at times. Over the past few months I have felt the stress of this more than ever. Not only do I have my embroidery business, but I also have a full time job as well. Learning to balance both these and my personal life has come with numerous sacrifices. I went from being able to relax and spend time with friends on my weekends, to sewing and fulfilling orders on the. There are days where I work all day and then come home and work until late into the night on embroidery orders. At the end though, I wouldn’t change a single thing about it all. It may have taken a while, but I have found a work life balance that works for me. Not only that, but I LOVE both my jobs and I never feel like I am truly working. That in itself is all I’ve ever hoped to find for my career.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Whispering Aspens Embroidery is special because while there are many businesses that do exactly what we do, we offer custom orders of any size! Whether it is 1 item or 1,000 items on the order we are happy to work with each customer and strive to make their experience working with us a great one. I am proud of not only how quickly we are able to get orders fulfilled and shipped out to our customers, but the positive feedback we get from our customers. Living in a community where supporting small local owned businesses has really helped us get where we are today. While we do face challenges we are able to push through and learn from each one to help us better our business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday-Take a day trip to Glennwood Springs. (take a cave tour, have lunch, do some shopping, and spend time at the hot springs)
Tuesday- Relax in the morning and then head to Steamboat Springs for an afternoon of exploring downtown Steamboat. (go skiing if its winter)
Wednesday- Go fishing in one of the many creeks in the area.
Thursday- spend the day just driving around taking in the sights. The mountains provide a wonderful experience
Friday- relax during the morning, pack a lunch, hike to Devils Causeway and have a picnic, then for dinner go to the Antlers in Yampa, Colorado
Saturday & Sunday- Take a weeked camping trip in the Flattops.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family & friends have been absolutely AMAZING thoughout this whole journey! They have supported me through all of the trial and errors that come with starting a new business. A special shoutout to my aunt and her mom who helped me get started in the embroidery business back when I lived in Kentucky. They both own their own embroidery business and helped me to learn how to run the business.
