We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Huneycutt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always loved the vintage lifestyle. My husband and I have several vintage cars and one day I received a call from a photographer, Brenda Todd asking if she could borrow some vehicles and a vintage camper we had as props for a photoshoot. In return I would receive a free photoshoot. Of course we said yes ! As soon as I got my photos back, I started sharing them all over. I even submitted the work to “Rocket Magazine” a Pinup based magazine. They were accepted and published and I was on cloud 9! I shared on social media and the response was insane! I realized there is really a passion for this lifestyle out there! I wanted to put my own spin on it. I didn’t just want to be another photographer. I wanted to start something BIG! I wanted to see women laughing, smiling, loving themselves and each other! I want this to be a REAL GANG, a sisterhood. Boy were the ideas turning in my head!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I truly feel like Pinups and Pumps is just not your normal girl gang. We are a true sisterhood. We aren’t just photography. We give back to our community as well. In 2021 we raised $25,000 for the Butterfly House (a child advocacy center for sexually abused children). We host an annual car show called, STILL RUNS located in Downtown Albemarle, NC. Proceeds from that show go back to local non profits like the Esther House (a shelter for battered women) our Veterans, and many more. What we do is not easy. We do everything pretty much on our own. We very rarely ask for sponsorships. Matter of fact, the only time we really ask for sponsorships is the Still Runs Car Show hosted every Mother’s Day weekend. I feel like there is so much jealously, chaos, and hate in the world. I feel like we all needed to our part to change that. My business is to help women see their natural beauty no matter their size, shape, age, nationality, background, etc. I wanted to empower women thru the art of the pinup. It hasn’t been all rainbows and sunshine. I live in a super small that is not always supportive. I have hosted several shows all over the southeast, been interviewed several times, made several publications, and not one time has my own small town even reached out to us. That part kind of messed with my head for awhile. Then as the business grew, the gigs were booking left and right, and word was getting out I learned all I need to do is keep pushing! I think my town is “kind of” coming around but no matter what I have to do what is best for me and the women of Pinups of Pumps!
I just hope at the end of the day we made a woman fall back in love with herself. I hope we made her see what it felt like to feel sexy again, to feel desired, to feel loved, safe, and most of all that she matters!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my girls were coming into my town to visit the first place I would take her to would be Pinups and Pumps. I would let her see the work that was out in to our new home that is completely revamped to look a modern day vintage home. I would make sure we hit our local hometown dive bar, Harmanco’s for the best steaks and late night drinks! One thing super cool about our little town is we are close to it all. We could hangout in Down Albemarle trying to feel bougie and hit up Ascension Float Spa, grab a beer from Badin Brewery, and then head to toss some axe at The Tomahawk Throwing Range & Blade Shop. There is so much to do here in such a small place. Like shopping for antiques at The Marketplace, riding scooters from boutique to boutique, catching a comedy show at The Boardroom, and so much more! If you are super adventurous we even have Carolina Treetop Challenge (zip lining and obstacle course) and of course the beautiful Lake Tillery where you have to stop by and see our friends, Amber and Chris Soloman at River Wild! You won’t be disappointed!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
