We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Monteith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I think it’s important to continuously explore who you are, whatever that means for you. Many creatives go through many mediums before they find the one that clicks. I circled back to photography right before we had kids after struggling with what I wanted to do for many years. It merged into a career accidentally (Thanks, Jenny!) but once I realized what I could do with this work, the meaning behind it, the consistent pursuit felt necessary.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I see what I do as translating how something feels into a photograph. I don’t want to hand you back an image, I want to hand you back a feeling. And hopefully some visual imagery that takes you back into those moments, those days, those years. My goal is to help people document their lives from the perspective of how it feels rather than how it looked.
It took a long time for me to fully embrace this career and find the balance between family and work. There were a lot of early mornings and late nights for a long time, and sometimes still. But again, as our hearts yearn for more, we tend to make space where necessary.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably take them to New Terrain for a beer and music. Or maybe up to Indian Hot Springs!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course my husband, Matt. He has consistently pushed me to continue to pursue what I love and there is no way I would have left the security of working for others had he not done so. I recognize the combination of privilege and luck I have benefitted from and I take none of it for granted.
