We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Currie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In the very beginning of starting my business there was no balance. I was working as a Clinical Registered Dietitian at the hospital from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and then going to the gym and personal training clients or seeing private nutrition clients from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. I took Saturdays off, but then trained clients for four hours on Sundays. I must say I felt like dying a lot of the time, but it had to be done in order to leave the safety net of the hospital and go out on my own. You have to burst at the seams while you transition. The balance improved once I left the hospital and was on my own, but it was still a daily hustle. Gradually over the years I was able to condense my schedule. I cut out the 6:00 a.m. clients and the 7:30 p.m. clients. I didn’t work every single weekend. Nowadays I work very hard to keep the balance and set boundaries but it is hard. Once in a while I say yes when I shouldn’t, and then I get mad at myself. As my business partner says, “There are no fitness emergencies.” so these days I am working on not checking my phone every second.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a fitness and wellness company offering personal training, Pilates, nutrition, triathlon and run coaching, massage therapy and acupuncture. Within personal training we offer post rehabilitation training and pre/post natal training. Our goal is to help clients reach their health and fitness goals safely and effectively, whether that be crossing a finish line, shedding pounds, improving strength, or leaning out. For our post rehab clients we work closely with doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors and other medical professionals to help bridge the gap between therapy and an active lifestyle.

What sets us apart is our post rehab training. We realized years ago that most average people have injuries and most trainers don’t know how to deal with injuries. We truly feel we are a pioneer in this space. But injuries aside, the path to a strong, healthy body isn’t very different than getting someone fully functional after an injury. Our training is smart, proper and not fancy. It works.

Business-wise it was a lot of hustle and a lot of networking. It was nowhere near easy! Early mornings, late nights, Meeting with doctors, Physical Therapists in our “free time.” And we’re not done. It’s constant.

As far as lessons learned, you can’t ever really relax. You have to keep the momentum going. Where is the next client coming from?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ha well considering this is New York City the options are endless. We’d start the day with some kind of exercise. A walk or run in Central Park or a bike up the west side highway along the Hudson River. Once we had a calorie cushion we’d get brunch at a cute place in Williamsburg or the West Village. We’d definitely have to do touristy things such as a Broadway show or the statue of liberty. One of my favorite things to take people to is the Tenement museum on the lower east side. It’s such a rich part of the city’s history learning about the immigrant families who helped build NYC. Over the weekend I’d plan a trip to the Hamptons where we’d of course work out in Physical Equilibrium’s East Hampton gym and Pilates studio. Maybe do a wine tasting at Wolfer Winery or simply ride our bikes to the beach. Then pick up some food at the farm stand for dinner.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business partner Sara Dimmick definitely deserves a shoutout! I wouldn’t be here without her or her mentorship early on.
