We had the good fortune of connecting with Scotty Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scotty, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It’s always been a dream of mine to open an old school arcade. After numerous years living Salida and having worked with the youth in our community at the Boys & Girls Club I was able to see the need for more family friendly activities in our town. I knew if I could provide a safe and fun environment for all ages it would be a hit.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Fun Street Family Arcade is an all ages friendly, family entertainment center. We offer a safe, clean environment for everyone to come in and share in some nostalgic fun. Whether it’s someone’s first time at the arcade or any of our older kids reminiscing their childhood, we strive to make every experience here memorable.
We’re thankful to offer a space for birthday parties, private events and fundraising. We’ve even had two wedding parties here. It’s become an important part of our community as a great place for families and their kids to have as an option for fun.
As for challenges, being a first time business owner has been quite the learning experience. Of all the things I’ve learned, most importantly is having a positive impact on your community is a huge part of one’s success. Focusing on the needs of the families around here and being a supporter of other local businesses in turn helps us all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A perfect day would be waking up to a beautiful sunrise over S mountain, walk downtown to Biker and the Baker for some fresh coffee and a Biker Bennie on their roof top deck.
As for the day the options are limitless. Seasonal conditions apply of course. I’d have to say rafting in the summer, followed by some disc golf at either one of our now two local courses. A mountain bike ride, or a hike. Winter I’ll more than likely be up at Monarch on a fresh day or putting another log on the fire and relaxing before work.
Lunch time I’d more than likely be at Amica’s, Sweetie’s, or Little Cambodia. If time and schedule allowed, I’d be at Highside Bar and Grill enjoying their patio with a couple afternoon drinks.
Happy Hour would certainly include a trip to Elevation for some tasty beverages, followed by a stop by Soul Craft Brewing.
Dinner I’d want to take friends to Current’s, Las Camelia’s, The Fritz or Moonlight Pizza.
There really are options for everyone in this town. Shops to see would be Ruby Blues, Eye Candy, J2, Yolo, and of course stopping by to play games at Fun Street Family Arcade!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I’ve got to thank my entire family. The love and support they’ve shown me over the years is amazing. They’ve always encouraged me to follow my heart and dreams, to be kind and care for others. I am beyond thankful for them each and every day.
Shout out to the Chaffee County Boys & Girls Club here in Salida and Buena Vista. Thankful for the leadership and staff I worked with there over the years, as well as the endless volunteers who aided in the programs I ran or was a part of. Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club I was able to build and strengthen relationships with the youth in our community. One of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
Shout out to our community themselves. Without their love and support this place wouldn’t have made it over the years and especially not through recent events. Truly an incredible place to live.
And of course Shout out to High Country Bank and their believing in my dreams and vision for this place.
Thanks to Stacy of course in the Shout out for suggesting me for the interview.
