We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanelle Crankshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanelle, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe in most things we do in life realistically we are taking a risk! Whether applying for that new job or promotion. Moving, buying, selling. Making any REAL decision is a risk. That being said not all people have the faith or drive with THEMSELVES to risk ONLY their assets and be willing to take on the liability, responsibility or accountability it takes to put in to start their own journey. We’re afraid of the “what-if’s”. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I personally never wanted to regret the “what-if’s”. I’m genuinely risking EVERYTHING I have! An opportunity presented itself and I went for it! I’m confident even when I’m scared. Your foundation and what your capable of doing will openly come from your confidence and how you treat yourself! Give yourself permission to live a big life. Stop playing small. It’s constant hustle and learning my own strengths and weaknesses that continue to drive me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I wouldn’t necessarily say I am trying to set myself apart. In the industry I am in as a stylist/artist we all sincerely build each other up! I love bouncing ideas and hearing how another stylist would execute a client! If anything I would say what sets me apart is I do not sugar coat. I am honest to a fault. If you bring me in an idea and I do not believe it is a good fit, I will be honest and back up my opinion and give you my professional opinion based on you and your hair or face shape. I give very THOUROUGH consultations. It’s important to me that you still feel confident when you leave and have to style your own hair at home. How well you maintain your hair. I am extremely passionate about the integrity of your hair and educating clients on products and why certain products are important. What am I most proud of? I am proud I stayed true to myself! I am proud I never stopped learning and am willing to ask for advice or find the answer to educate myself. I am proud some of my work has been featured in several magazines. 303 magazine was my favorite because that’s my hometown! I professionally am where I am today because I have fallen and had some harsh realities! I have hustled from day 1! Sitting endlessly in the salon day after day, waiting for the phone to ring or someone to walk in. Sometimes with not one single person! My work ethic started out strong. It was me and only me that could build my foundation. I did not get paid by the hour. Only if someone walked in! I definitely have had to humble myself and that’s not easy! I’m so incredibly happy and still so so passionate about my craft. I would honestly say I am proud of myself! LOL The lessons I’ve learned is to not take your success for granted! What you give, you get back! I want the world to know that an indecision, is the decision to suffer. If you want to do something that your passionate about, do it! Problems are ok! Without problems, you’re not able to grow. Problems strengthen us! It’s NEVER permanent! After one year of practicing the law of attraction, it completely changed my mindset and everything I manifested, has come to pass!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love food! One of my favorite spots to eat is Sushi Hai in the Highlands. I’m a native so the mountains will always have my heart! Particularly Glenwood Springs. I am from the Northglenn /Thornton area. One of my long time go to spots is Joe Palookas in Thornton. This is where a lot of locals hangout! You can find the owner herself behind the bar Jennifer Macey! A long time friend of over 15 years! I currently live in Brighton. You could call me a “local” here! My good friend Dan has owned Jordinellis Sports Bar and Grill. They have by far the BEST wings in Brighton! My personal favorite is their “Honey Siracha” Another spot all the locals hang out, if you’re feeling your best self, go to Main Bar and Karaoke and sing!!! Karaoke every night of the week! Tell Alex the owner I sent you! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I absolutely would be nothing without my loyal clients!!! I have some clients upwards of 17 years! Some have followed me even after moving as far as Cheyenne, WY! I am so incredibly grateful for their support over the years! Even through some rough parts of my life, they showed me grace and true loyalty! I have to thank my kids for their understanding and patience. I wasn’t always able to make sporting events or school activities. Putting in 10-12 hr days, daily, weekly including weekends. They now know and see first hand what it takes and actually all help have a hand in what my business is today! They respect me and are incredibly proud of me and that is an award in itself. They truly were my driving force!
