We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my practice is telling people the truth and then delivering on that truth. I give an honest care plan with clear expectations and objective measurements that should be attained at the end of the time commitment.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I went to chiropractic school without ever being adjusted or even meeting a chiropractor. I had no idea what chiropractic truly was. In school all I learned was academia- the big words, diagnosis, how to read labs, etc. I thought if I graduated top of my class, I would absolutely have a successful practice. I graduated cum laude but to my surprise, I completely failed my first 3 years in business. I couldn’t pay my bills, I had very few patients and was completely miserable in life. Then I met my mentor, Tim Young. He taught me what the school didn’t- the chiropractic art and philosophy. The art is giving a specific, intentional adjustment with the proper line of drive. A child can walk on your back or a friend can give you a hard hug and that makes a popping noise, that is not an adjustment. A chiropractor can place hands on you and make a “pop” but it doesn’t mean it’s a proper, specific, intentional adjustment. The adjustments are an art. You must know which bones to move, which direction to move them and know ‘why’ you are moving them. They ‘why ‘ is the philosophy.
We are all born with an Innate Intelligence within us. This is the intelligence that transmutes an egg and sperm into a perfect baby, the intelligence that heals a broken bone or creates a scab with perfect new skin developed underneath. The intelligence that controls everything from our heart beating to our digestion and so much more. When a bone in the spine is out of place, called a subluxation, this innate intelligence is decreased. Our bodies cannot heal, function, or exist as they should in this state. When subluxated people are on a state of dis-ease. Sometimes this produces pain, other times problems sleeping, other times with dysfunctional organs, bowel problems or so many other ways. When a chiropractor gives a specific adjustment and restores the ability of innate intelligence to communicate with the body, the body can heal almost anything. That’s chiropractic philosophy.
Since learning the importance of the chiropractic art and philosophy, I have turned them into my passion. I have a spine set up in my house and practice adjustments. I record myself practicing adjustment to watch my technique, just like athletes who watches tape to see where they can improve. I have spent many weekends away from my family learning from adjusting masters or attending chiropractic philosophy events.
I know when my patients get adjusted, they are not just getting “cracked” my patients are getting the interference removed from their nervous system so they can function at 100% of their maximum potential as directed by Innate Intelligence.
This is what sets my office apart from many other offices. I believe, I know, the power that made the body heals the body. I expect and see miracles in my office. We see women who couldn’t get pregnant get pregnant, babies who couldn’t thrive, thrive, people who have seizures go seizure free, people able to reduce of quit their medicines, we‘ve seen so many miracles. We are not expecting to just reduce neck and back pain in our office, we are expecting to see bodies create miracles. All of which occur because of the specific adjustments with the intention to allow the body to heal itself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting for a week , we would have our first meal at Garden of the Gods Gourmet. Then we would head to Manitou where we would climb the Incline. After our hike, we would go around and sample the water from all the springs and check out a lot of the local shops, hopefully sampling some jerky and eating ice cream. I’d do my best to convince my friend to do old time photos-that’s one of my absolute favorites! After some photos we would head over to the penny arcade and hopefully run in to Dennis the Emu. We would definitely hit up the Rabbit Hole for a dinner. We would also treat our children to a night at Great Wolf Lodge and stay and play there for a day or two. Followed by a day trip to the North Pole. After that, we would get back to the adult fun. We’d hit up a concert at Red Rocks amphitheater, race go karts at OverDrive and then do some indoor Sky Diving.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Tim Young is a chiropractor in OKC and he completely changed my life. I first met him at a 2 day chiropractic seminar that he created. After that weekend, I signed up for him to be my coach. He taught me about the art, science and philosophy of chiropractic. He also taught me how to run a successful practice and that being a great person and always loving others is the most important thing.
