We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m an entrepreneur at heart. As a child, I sold snacks at sporting events, setting up my own store on the fly. As an adult, my identity became my business venture. I was a professional mountain bike racer, and like any pro athlete, I capitalized on my persona in addition to my competitive achievements. From there, I found my niche in television, particularly on-camera sales. From the Home Shopping Network to infomercials, direct-to-consumer marketing came naturally to me. Ultimately, I knew I wanted to create my own product line that would serve the greater good and deliver on its promise. When I was introduced to the science of biodesigned elastin, it all just clicked. Without hesitation, I did everything in my power to bring NULASTIN® to market.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Starting your own brand is not easy, that’s for sure. I self-funded NULASTIN by taking out a mortgage, depleting my savings and sacrificing all of life’s little luxuries. I was a solopreneur for the first 5 years and did everything myself. While there were times when I felt like throwing in the towel, I never gave up and built NULASTIN into a $17 million brand before hiring my first employee. You have to trust your vision.

I was introduced to elastin rejuvenation at the very moment I was facing the impacts of stress, facial paralysis, aging and environmental aggressors on my skin and hair (it was coming out in clumps!). My aha moment struck when I realized there were no elastin replenishing products on the market for hair, lashes and brows. I began working with leading biotech researchers to pioneer the first-to-market collection of high-performance elastin solutions that deliver real, visible, age-defying results.

NULASTIN serums are formulated with the first ethically sourced elastin renewal protein in beauty. What a lot of people don’t know is that elastin surrounds every hair follicle and makes up the Elastin Root™ System, a web-like structure that anchors-and-binds hair follicles to the root for strength and resilience. By replenishing elastin at the follicle, NULASTIN serums help fortify the Elastin Root™ System so users experience less shedding and more enhanced fullness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were hosting a friend for a week and our goal was to explore the city and surrounding areas, the first thing I would do is put them up in a boutique hotel, like Kimpton Hotel Monaco Denver—a celeb favorite with a chic vibe and top notch amenities.

Day one, we would head to Larimer Square to shop and grab a late lunch at one of the many options for food lovers. To unwind after lunch, we’d stroll around the Denver Performing Arts Complex, soaking up the entertainment and cultural options, and likely take in a show or an exhibition. I had the pleasure of catching Coco Chanel’s exhibition a few years back and the experience was awe-inspiring. Afterwards, we’d grab a late dinner, sitting barside at some swanky restaurant and striking up a conversation with the bartender, which is a surefire way to get an insider perspective of the local happenings.

Day two would be about natural and science. It would start with a walk around Washington (Wash) Park or the Cherry Creek path, followed by a visit to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. This museum blew my mind when I took my nephew there years ago, so I’d love to relive it through adult eyes. The Dinosaur exhibits are extraordinary! We’d cap off the afternoon at an IMAX showing, then head back to the hotel, grab a pre-prepared picnic basket and relax in nature at the Botanic Gardens.

Day three would focus on Denver’s must sees, including free shuttle rides along 16th Street Mall and the Denver Union Station. We’d enjoy people watching and make it a goal to talk to as many strangers as we could to liven up the experience. I’m guessing this would happen after a few craft beers—Denver has over 150 pubs to choose from. In a perfect world, there would be a game at Coors Field. We’d put our ball caps on backward, grab a sunny seat overlooking the Rocky Mountains, eat hot dogs and get rowdy!

On day four, we’d grab a rental car for an overnight excursion to Boulder, my home town and NULASTIN’s headquarters. After touring the office, which is located downtown on Pearl Street, we’d grab coffee at the Trident, an iconic local hangout with an espresso that never disappoints. Once fueled up on caffeine, we’d head up the Boulder Creek Path and explore Red Rocks and Mount Sanitas Trails. The view from any of these peaks gives you a glimpse into Boulder’s tree canopy coverage, which is a mandated initiative that requires property owners to plant and upkeep trees. After checking into the Boulderado, we’d grab a quick shower and head down Pearl Street to Avanti for a bite to eat and a glass of rosé. The view is one of the best in town and inspires conversation and dreams of what’s to come. Around the corner from Avanti is the historic Boulder Theatre, where we’d enjoy some curated entertainment before heading back to the hotel for a nightcap.

Day five is morning yoga followed by a road trip to Estes Park to visit the Stanley Hotel. I love sitting on the front porch, ordering a glass of champagne and breathing the fresh air. There’s typically a wedding, or some grand event happening, and the vibe feels anticipatory. Of course, the historic tour is a must, where tales of Jack Nicholson, The Shining, ghosts and steam engines will imprint on your soul forever. We’d skip the highway on our way back to Boulder and take the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway—a road I’ve biked countless times. Driving it is a real treat, it’s surrounded by majestic lakes and breathtaking viewpoints, making the drive a real treat.

Day six, knowing full well that my guest may need some pampering, we’d enjoy a day of indulgence at the Woodhouse Spa. We’d spare no expense and leave feeling more connected, calm and balanced. On a mission to keep our skin fresh and a vow to be makeup free, we’d head back to the hotel and order room service, catch up like childhood friends in our PJs and keep things heartfelt and mellow.

Day seven, our last day together, would be spent visiting Cherry Creek for some high-end shopping. Known as the Rodel Drive of Denver, Cherry Creek North has some real gems. Since today is more “shi shi”, we’d opt for sushi at Hapa. Goodbyes would be shared later in the afternoon and we’d make a plan for the next reunion.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m a rancher’s daughter. That’s a title I often reference when explaining why I do what I do. The sum experience of this upbringing means that I value integrity, responsibility, hard work and community. My shoutout goes out to my heritage and the cowboy culture that shaped me. It is the fortitude that led me to where I am now, building the NULASTIN® brand and making a meaningful impact on people’s lives.
