We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharon Madison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharon, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Sharon, how do you approach daily life these days? Is it the same or different from your earlier life?
I’ve always believed that my mindset and attitude are key to a quality life! I must feed my mind with the right words so I can turn them into powerful actions. If I want to accomplish something, I start by believing I can make it happen, and from there, I start pounding out the necessary actions to get me where I want to go! I am not so naive to think there won’t be detours or pitfalls —— that’s where I always challenge myself to “find the positive in the negative.” I have to say these two simple guideposts have served me well on my life’s journey.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What does a typical workday look like for you?
I love my job because of the wonderful people I’m surrounded by or the gratification I get from the club’s fundraising successes. An added bonus to my job is that I do not have a typical workday. Even though I always have a day’s plan, I know that something may come up that switches up what I thought I would be doing. On any given day, I may find myself talking to a potential new sponsor explaining the benefits of partnering with WR4, or I can be out leading a ride for the members. I love working with Primal designing our jerseys and kits. I love the planning that goes into multi-day club events and even more fun going on them and watching the bonding that occurs among the members. I like to get all “to-dos” off my daily list, but I have had to learn that no day is a guarantee to get identified tasks completed. Instead, I have learned to embrace my “anything but a typical workday” because I know all my efforts, even the unplanned ones, support the continued success of my brainchild—- We Ride 4!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
How did these guiding principles help you start your new business?
Little did I know how important it would be to believe so firmly that there’s always a positive that can be found in a negative! I had been the program director for the cycling club arm of a Denver-based non-profit for six years. I was proud of my results in building a thriving membership from almost nothing when I started. I loved the camaraderie and support among the members. It was to be no more when the pandemic hit and caused the non-profit to have to shut down its operation. That meant I was no longer in charge of the wonderful group of members. How would I figure out how to “find a positive in a negative?” After some reflection, I thought, “Hey, why can’t I build my own non-profit?” I could make the membership even more robust by building a community of members around the mission: We Ride to Give—- supporting local non-profits whose mission is to get more kids involved in healthy outdoor activities. I made my mind up to make my idea become a reality! The 501(c)(3) paperwork was approved by the State, and We Ride 4 became an official entity by the end of April 2020. As the Executive Director, I rolled up my sleeves and got busy building the membership and finding local non-profits to ride 4. In just 2 years, I am ecstatic where things are at: 326 members, 2 chapters, one in Denver and one in Tucson, and great success in raising more than $60k for Cottonwood Institute, our first non-profit partnership, and raising several thousand for the Pueblo Road Warriors in Tucson.
Someday I believe We Ride 4 will go national with chapters sprouting up around the country! Every day, my mindset helps me to take baby steps to get closer to making my dream of going national come true.
