We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharon Trilk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharon, what do you attribute your success to?
Volunteering my time and being involved in multiple organizations, such as our Chambers of Commerce, fire departments and other nonprofits, that help make my community a better place. The friends I’ve made and the relationships I’ve built since starting my business help to fuel my passion. My fellow business owners, nonprofit directors, and community members have come together to support a community we care deeply about, while supporting each other in our business endeavors. It’s a win-win for all of us!
What should our readers know about your business?
My Mountain Town exists to connect our community members, businesses and nonprofits online, and provide a place where people can share and gather reliable information to stay informed and safe. Before social media was as big as it is today, there were community forums such as ours that shared emergency information, news, weather, events and more, and allowed residents and neighbors to connect with one another in areas that were under-served by traditional media. We are one of your original and local online resources!
What sets us apart is our commitment to sharing timely, reliable information from trusted sources and providing services that no one else had at the time we began, such as webcams along Highway 285 and videos of area meetings and political debates so those who couldn’t attend in person still received critical information that impacted them.
We are most proud when we hear from people that our site is the first place they go to to find out what’s going on, and that our information is the most reliable and trustworthy. In an emergency such as a wildfire, that can be critical to helping people make informed decisions that save lives and to know that we are making that kind of difference in our community means the world to us.
Being an solo entrepreneur is never easy. Every task to keep your business running and thriving, such as accounting, marketing, sales, etc is on you, requiring you to learn skills you never realized you’d need. My advice for my fellow business owners is to constantly be ready to adapt and learn new ways of doing what needs to be done, and build a great support team to help you succeed.
I went from being a scientist to a stay-at-home mom to a business owner. My goal in life has always been to make a positive difference in the world, and while it hasn’t been the path I thought it would be when I was younger, it’s been rewarding, heartbreaking, joyful, and fulfilling. I am so grateful for the opportunity to do what I do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love introducing my friends to the beautiful Foothills of Colorado with its glorious natural beauty, gems of small businesses, and the best people to meet! We’d have to go hiking at Staunton State Park, in several Jeffco Open Space Parks, and around Evergreen Lake to see the amazing views from high above and the abundant wildlife to photograph. We’d go shopping at Luna’s Mandala, The Crystal Garden, The Chill Squirrel, Native Vibrations, and Fun & Funky Art Gallery. After all that activity made us famished, we’d go sit outside along the Platte River at Aspen Peak Cellars in Bailey and enjoying amazing food and delicious wine, or head up to Brooks Place Tavern in Conifer for a scrumptious burger and Caesar salad.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Melissa Baker of Gerou & Associates for leading by fantastic example! I can’t think of anyone else who gives more time and works harder for our community, and without expectation of any reward other than a job well done and our community enjoying the results of her efforts.
