Meet Skylinn Johnson | Automotive Influencer & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylinn Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Skylinn, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is one my dad used to say all the time before he passed away in January. Whenever I was feeling mentally drained or didn’t feel like doing something, he would look at me and say “you don’t have to…you GET to”. I think about that a lot and how it’s affected my life when I apply it to my job with cars. I don’t have to follow my dream, I get to. I don’t have to work with cars, I get to.
I am so thankful for my dad and all he did for me, especially pushing me to follow my dream of being an automotive influencer. He loved women representing themselves in male dominated fields and I’m glad I “get to” do that every day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love my job. I think being a woman who tries to champion other women in the industry is incredible! I’m really excited what the future has to offer and how I can inspire more people to learn about cars.
One of the most challenging parts of my career has been not letting what others think or say affect me. Putting a huge portion of your life on the internet really opens you up to hate and other commentary. I’ve had to learn how to have a thicker skin and realize that what others say, think, or do shouldn’t affect how I view myself or what I do.
I want people to know that no matter what they shouldn’t ever let others drag them down and that they are not alone. I know others have gone through hate as well which is why in 2022 I am creating a brand for automotive enthusiasts that focuses on mental health! Dark Speed donates a percentage of every sale to mental health research, charities, and more to give back and keep the mental health movement going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a Colorado native and growing up part time in Denver. I would have to show them some of my favorite spots downtown first! Death & Company is an amazing place to get craft cocktails while basking in the aesthetics of the place! I also love “Super Mega Bien” next to Death & Co because they have some or the best food I’ve ever had.
Leaving Denver I would take them to the town I grew up in the rest of the time! My dad lived in Winter Park part of his life and thankfully, so did I. I have so many memories at “Deno’s Mountain Bistro” off of Main Street and their steaks are amazing. For some fun, I would take them to the Alpine Slide and mini golfing at the base of Winter Park resort.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First off I would love to give a shout-out to my father who always put me first and encouraged me to always be kind and never be told a girl can’t be into cars.
Secondly, I want to thank my incredible fiancé for being my rock and always celebrating every victory with me (big or small) while also being there on the days that are the hardest.
Lastly, I want to thank all the others who have been with me during this journey. There’s too many people to name, but I hope they know who they are and how much I care about all of them.
