We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Blasco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sofia, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I don’t think anyone should ever give up. This doesn’t mean we will all do exactly what we set out to do, but in going for it fully and never giving up you land right where you are supposed to. Changing paths or forming new values and ideas doesn’t mean you “gave up” on the initial idea, it just means that goal lead you somewhere else.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Dancer Movement: reimagining dance for people with disabilities. Our goal is to open the dance world to be inclusive to all people because everyone deserves the chance to dance. I like to think that we are inspiring a new generation of dancers that view this artistic world as something that can be changed. The dance world is very exclusive in a lot of ways. While there are a lot of people working to change that, more can be done for the inclusion of people with disabilities. It has not been easy to get where we are, and we have so many more things we hope to do. I have learned to never let anyone else tell me it can’t or shouldn’t be done. There is always something more to learn and we must all be more open to other human experiences. I will never be an expert but I hope to learn more everyday and bring what expertise I do have, about dance, to combine the two worlds together. The world should know that we are making our way to everyone’s little corner and we are bringing dance to all! I’ve always said that dance is the most natural thing humans can do. Dance has been a part of human existence for as far back as we can track: why would we make it exclusive and prestigious? Let’s all dance and let’s all dance together!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not actually based physically in Colorado…however this is the nature of the virtual world we live in! I have taught many dance classes to people in Colorado (ie the woman who inspired the business is in Colorado) and done a few interviews for Colorado based companies. I would love to visit every small, local business in the area. Small businesses are always the most wonderful and inspiring experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My close friend, mentor, and the inspiration for my business, Julie Stamm. Not only did she open my eyes to a world that I was unaware of, but she always believed that I could go out there and change it. She has taught me so much and believed in me the entire way. She is an inspiring woman, mom, writer, entrepreneur, and friend.
