Meet Spencer McKee | Media strategist, journalist, adventure athlete

We had the good fortune of connecting with Spencer McKee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spencer, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without taking risks, it’s easy to grow stagnant in life, caught in some sort of comfort zone. While taking a risk can be a bit terrifying, maybe even irresponsible in some cases, I’ve always viewed taking risks as a means of pushing me closer to the future self I ultimately want to become. I think something that comes along with taking risks is learning valuable information about oneself and one’s true potential. Risks can’t be taken without sometimes leading to mistakes or failure, but I think taking risks helps me grow as a person and I think that tends to outweigh the negative consequences faced along the way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If there’s anything I’ve learned throughout my professional life, it’s that being able to adapt and evolve as challenges arise is something that’s key to positive growth. I’m nowhere near the same person professionally that I was five years ago and I hope I’m nowhere near the same person that I am today five years from now. Change is natural and life is unpredictable. It’s about how you roll with the punches while also making sure you learn something along the way. Expect difficulties and embrace them as a chance to build something better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Colorado’s Front Range is kind of a tale of two cities – Denver and Colorado Springs. Hands down, my favorite Denver experience is a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Nature meets music meets city life in a magical way there. At the same time, I also love Colorado Springs for its convenient access to epic outdoor recreation. The Manitou Incline is sure to be an experience that’s hard to forget, while destinations like Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods cater to people representing a wide range of athletic abilities – from sidewalk photographers to mountain athletes in their prime. It’s hard to go wrong with a one-two combo of Denver and Colorado Springs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s no doubt behind who keeps me pushing farther and harder as I try to keep growing as a person – it’s my family. I’m thankful and fortunate to have had them in my corner along the way, with them both leading me by example and also supporting me as I take my risks, through the wins and the losses and ups and downs. My dad taught me about ambition, my mom taught me about strength, and my sister taught me how to keep a gentle heart. Without them as a part of my life, I wouldn’t be me.
