We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Hancock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
We take risks everyday simply by choosing to get out of bed. Everyday we have the opportunity to show up in the world honestly and with integrity. I trust God to direct my steps and my life has been filled with many challenges and many rewards. It took me a while to realise that I, under God’s direction have control over my destiny and not others. When I was younger I bought into the notion that you work a job for your whole life and if you do it well you will be secure. I stayed even when I was treated badly. Then one day my husband said, “why are you putting up with this, quit that job”. I did, and that was a turning point for me. I realised that I didn’t have to settle and live a life of quiet desperation. My search for my calling began. I’ve had so many different jobs, from serving in the US Air Force, to direct market sales, radio show producer, assistant manger of an apartment community, prep cook in a kitchen and project manger at a tech company. Then with two friends I started a Theatre company. The lessons were invaluable and have lead me to where I am now, running for political office. Arguably, one of the biggest risks of my life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my late teens and early twenties, I spent time in the military and have worked in various industries over the years. At times it has been difficult, but every experience has made me the well-rounded, determined person I am today. There have always been pivotal people in my life that God used to help shape, guide and direct my steps. I am grateful.
Six years ago I started a company with two friends Adrienne Martin-Fullwood and Kenya Fashaw. 5280 Artist Co-Op was formed to tell unique stories from an Afro-centric perspective that are original, uplifting and touch the heart of the community. We were very successful in creating opportunities for creatives across all artistic disciplines telling compelling stories in a 15 minute micro-play format. Adrienne, Kenya and I have moved on to other opportunities now, but the experience has had a tremendously positive impact on our lives and we are better for it.
I am the President of the Aurora Cultural Arts District and I am currently running for political office to serve my community in Colorado House of Representatives, District 41. I have been actively seeking office since April of this year. The election is on November 8th. What sets me apart is the fact that I have a varied and eclectic work background, a lifetime of real-life experience and the energy and willingness to “Be the change I want to see in the world”. I’m so concerned about Crime, Affordability and Education and I want to work in the legislature to make positive changes that serve our community and future generations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever friends come to town, I always give them driving tour of the city, starting from I-70 looping around to 1-25 valley highway passing Mile-Hi Stadium pausing to look at the amazing Denver skyline then to 1-225 back to my neck of the woods to eat the best Vietnamese food in Aurora at Golden Saigon. The next day we drive up to Breckenridge to check out the mountain towns up close, enjoy some hot tubbing and maybe some mountain shopping. Day three is a rest and relax day then on day four we have got to visit the Museum of Nature & Science or the Botanic Gardens. Day five or six a trip down to the Garden of the Gods is always on the itinerary with lunch in Manitou Springs. I always let my guests lead the way on their visit choosing the things they want to see and do because after all, the Mile Hi City is a place to chill. We can thank the altitude for that.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest cheerleaders and supporters for me in this journey are my brilliant and talented husband of 43 years, Michael, He always supports and encourages me no matter what project I take on. My four super children Nikki, Andre’a, Michael II and Micah Angelique. My Mom May who modeled and taught me that I can do anything when I’m willing to put in the work and not give up.
