We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Haskett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Honestly, it was on a whim. I had been a stay-at-home mom for several years and was just starting to think about what the next stage would look like since my kids were growing up. I had worked for OZ Architecture in (Denver/Boulder) and Broadway Malyan (London) before I had kids and I knew I didn’t want to go back full-time just yet.  Someone in my neighborhood put out a request for design advice on one of the social media platforms for my neighborhood. I responded and said I could help and after that initial meeting, I came home and started working on making Haskett Designs a business. I didn’t expect it to take off the way it did but thanks to friends and friends of friends, I instantly gained clients and that’s how I’ve worked ever since. Sometimes a whim is all it takes to get going.

What should our readers know about your business?
Haskett Designs is a bit of a blend of architecture and interior design. I come from an architectural background which helps me see the big picture on projects and understand what needs to be done to achieve a beautiful interior. For design, I take on each project as if it were my own, I care about the details and how they look. But I understand it’s the client’s project and although I guide them in their decisions, it’s ultimately their space and they need to love it. Functionality is a big part of how I think through and design projects. We live in our houses and they need to meet our needs, not just look pretty. Being an interior designer is about getting to know the clients and understanding their needs and sometimes this is an intimate process and through this process, we spend a lot of time together so it’s important to have good communication and like each other.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I hope someday I have time to do more socializing and exploring but with a family busy with sports/activities there just isn’t time. But if you want to know about some good swimming or biking events, I’m the one to ask. There are several open water swims that the Mountain Swim Series puts on. I always swim the Carter Lake race in Loveland and you swim from one end to the other (3 miles).  There is also the Horsetooth Open Water Swim. You swim from one end of the reservoir to the other. It’s a 10k swim in Ft. Collins. For biking, there are several great bike rides every year. I’ve participated in the Triple Bypass (Evergreen to Vail) two times and it’s one of the best rides in Colorado.  The Copper Triangle is another great bike ride, in Summit County, that I did for the first time last summer. The Buff Classic is one I participate in every year.  All the funds go straight back to the University of Colorado for scholarships for students. There are several routes and distances and even gravel options. The best route is the kid’s route which includes face painting, balloon animals, and snow cones.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be a success without the trust of my friends who first hired me when I started Haskett Designs. That is still true today as many friends and family hire me for design help or pass my name to their friends and family. During my time at OZ, I had many wonderful mentors who shaped me into the designer I am today.  And of course my husband for supporting me and all the advice he has given me over the past few years (especially regarding lighting questions).
