We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, what principle do you value most?
Authenticity matters most to me, not only in what I write, but how I present my work to the public. I write contemporary romance, and while the stories are fictional, they are also grounded in reality. Using past experiences and research have helped me create characters that feel like someone you would actually know and give an accurate window into what they do. I also really enjoy interviewing and speaking with members of the local community to get my information. Anyone can Google “what’s it like to work on a farm?” but actually speaking with farmers or someone in whatever profession I happen to be writing about garners so much rich information that you would never find on the Internet. In that vein, I also present my books to potential readers as clearly as possible. With each book release, I outline tropes included and give enough background information so they get a real feel for whether or not they would enjoy the story.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When in elementary school, I enjoyed writing short stories and poetry, or even just making up stories in my head. Somewhere along the way toward adulthood, I lost that. Perhaps it was my not fostering the love myself or not feeling it was good enough, but over the course of the next twenty or so years, practical matters took precedent over creating. When the pandemic hit and we were all forced to slow down in a way by staying inside and away from others, I picked up a few books and just started devouring them. I could not stop reading, and soon enough the creativity that had lain dormant in my brain was wide awake and wanting to come out and play. Once I had my first story idea, I sat down to write it, not knowing if it would turn into anything useful or good, but wanting to enjoy the process. Two years later, I have written over fifteen novels and have published six of them with eight more under contract, but more than that, I am so happy to have writing back in my life. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from this is that it’s never too late to discover, or rediscover in my case, something you brings you joy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fort Collins is such an amazing city, so I am definitely spoiled for choice. Truly, any place in the city is lovely and activities are abundant. Hanging out in Old Town Square is relaxing and fun, and for a little more adventure, I would go up into Poudre Canyon for some hiking and beautiful views. As for my personal favorites, I would take my friend on a tour of local bakeries such as Little Bird Bakeshop or La Creperie followed by hiking at Lory State Park or up to Arthur’s Rock near Horsetooth Reservoir. The area is so beautiful and I am definitely one of those people who finds nature calming. Other fun places to visit during the work week would be our local independent bookstores such as Old Firehouse Books or Bookstore on the Square. I would also have to take them to Beau Jo’s for some Colorado style pizza. Nearer the weekend, seeing a movie at The Lyric or The Comedy Fort would be a great way to spend an evening, as would enjoying a cocktail and a good book at Blurred Words, a local bookstore and speakeasy. I am all about easy-going fun and any friend of mine likely would be as well, so this would be our ideal week.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would not be where I am today without the endless support of my husband and two daughters. All three have encouraged me to keep doing what I love to do, no matter what. Whether it’s providing a listening ear to my story ideas or simply leaving me to my work, all three members of my immediate family have been there for me.
